Summit water pump for 57 engine???
I used the search function but didn't find any old threads regarding water pumps on our old reverse cooling engines. I remember reading something regarding impeller vane direction differences on 4 bolt reverse-flow pumps VS 60-63 standard flow pumps.
Here's the deal: I ordered a water pump from Summit that they say is correct for my 57 engine. When I compare it to my old pump the vanes lean the wrong way. It's obvious the pump would suck water from the outside and pump it toward the middle of the pump....just ass backward from what it needs to do. The pump they sent is rebuilt [or marketed] by GMB and the number is 130-2835. Before I contact Summit I'd love to have the part number of the correct pump for the reverse cooling engines so I don't appear to be a moron...if possible. Anybody have the number for my 55-59 pump? How bout a rebuild kit number? Anything.... Thanks

It's been about ten years now but when I had my '59 engine built I bought the water pump from Rock Auto and it was a match.

There is no difference in reverse flow vs "conventional" flow water pumps. The difference in flow is taken care of in the housing. 1955-62 use the same water pump, Pontiac part # 540069. There has been discussion on different types of vanes from different suppliers, cast iron on some, stamped steel on others.

I agree with Larry. I used a "hub turns counterclockwise" WP58298 for a number of years in my '57 GMC (Pontiac) V8 347 and later a "hub turns clockwise" WP 58594 in the same engine. Couldn't tell a nickel's worth of performance difference between them. Certainly not the $61.50 difference that NAPA wants now.
That said, I defy anyone to show me any Pontiac engine that turns counterclockwise as looked at from the front.

Quote:
Both pumps are centrifugal. They may be more efficient running one way or the other, but they pump from the middle to the outside.

Got it....after careful scrutinazation I've determined I've been looking at the back of the pumps and getting the rotation mixed up....been up since 4 am working. Oops!
