73 F-body M21 Muncie, which ?
Just bought an entire drivetrain from a guy who decided to put an LS motor along with a Tremec transmission in his 67 Camaro.
I decoded the Muncie transmission and, according to all the numbers on it and the VIN stamped on it, it's from a '73 Norwood built Pontiac. So it's an F-body. Could you get an M21 in any F-body with any motor, or was this just for a 455 car ? Were SD cars M22 only ? Just wondering. It also has the original (I guess) shifter and rods. |

The M-20 wide ratio and M-21 close ratio were available on the Pontiac F body. The M-22 was not available.Look for the letter code stamped on the transmission.Which should be the last digit of the assembly code A=M-20,B=M-21,C=M-22.Hope this helps.

Ok I know the trans is an M21 as it has a B stamped on it, and one groove on the input shaft. Didn't know you could not get an M22 on an SD455 or any other for that matter.
could you get an M21 with a 400 ? |

You could get the M-21 on the Formula 400.

frankyboy455 - can you send me a PM with the VIN please? I have a '73 Formula 455-4 speed that came with an M21 originally.

Between 1980 when I sold the Trans Am with the original 4 spd in it and 1992 or so when the previous owner bought it equipped with a TH-400 somebody removed what I assume was an M21 from my Norwood built '73 TA that I own once again. All that remained was the clutch pedal zip tied out of the way under the dash.
I have an M20 for it and will use it but if the original is still out there, I'd be interested. My VIN is 2V87Y3N114xxx. Longshot since I figure whoever removed the trans was located in the Chicago area (where the car stayed from new) and likely the trans stayed local, but if the trans you acquired matches to this partial VIN, I'd like to pursue further. Thanks. |

FYI:
to those who are interested in aqquiring a close coded transmission, as far as I can recall, the partial vin stamp would have looked like this: 23Nxxxxxx 2 = Pontiac 3 = last digit of model year; 1973 N = Norwood Ohio assembly plant xxxxxx = final six digits of vin Also, as far as I am aware, the M22 was only available to model year 1971 & 1972 Pontiacs - otherwise the close ratio transmission was always the M21, until that too was phased out.

1972 was the last model year for a factory installed M-22 in any GM line...
Hope this helps... Crash |
