Rare 1974 Grand Am
The Pontiac-Oakland Museum just acquired another incredibly rare car, a 1974 Grand Am 4-door that was ordered as a performance car. The original owner was a high performance enthusiast but needed a family car, so the car was ordered with;
400 4bbl 4-speed trans (a $45.00 credit, as the Grand Am came standard with an automatic) Safe-T-Track rear Rally II Wheels Dual Exhaust Tachometer I show 833 4-speeds built between the LeMans and Grand Am, but no breakdown by model. I would imagine if it were a 50/50 split between LeMans and Grand Am, a 4-door Grand Am would probably be less than 100 built. Mike

I had a 73 455 2-dr Grand Am about 15 years ago. It was white with red vinyl top and red interior. I really liked that car.
I looked at a black 73 GA 455 automatic 4-dr car that was loaded up with options. Unfortunately it didn't check out well, there as evidence of accident damage to the rear quarter panel area. They are really under-rated cars and are excellent drivers. |

I think this is the one that was for sale a few months ago and there was a discussion here about it?
Being a four door with a four speed does make it pretty rare. The number I've heard is 187 four speed G/A's altogether (don't know if that's correct) but I'm sure the vast majority of them were two door cars. Always liked those cars, the other day I was looking at a series of Youtube videos where someone was building a pro-touring G/A. |

Here are two other 1974 400 4 speed Grand Am sedans that have surfaced in the past decade:

I love the car as I drove a '73 for almost 5 years everywhere. If it had air conditioning it'd be perfect. I had to get rid of mine when I had a family as the back seat was no good for kids in car seats. |

I mentioned this in the A body section some time ago - there's a '75 Lemans four door for sale, at a used car lot just north of Rochester, MN. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=805519
It's not a G/A, but if you're looking for a four door A body it may be worth investigating. |

Seems like the one discussed here was a green 4 door.

Stuart, I've viewed the car from Hwy. 52 several times in the last year.

Not long after I moved to Raleigh (about 25 years ago), I found a 1973 2-dr 400 4-spd GA. It was all original, but had some engine problems. Body was in great shape, in general the car was pretty well optioned. I did my best to buy it, but owner was planning to fix it up. I asked the owner if I could leave my name and phone number in the glove box so it wouldn't get lost.
About 3 - 4 years ago, I got a call from the owner's son. His dad had passed away and the car was for sale. I went to see it, and it was sad. When I first found the car, it was stored in a small detached garage behind the owner's house. The son had moved it outside about 15 years earlier to make room for a motorcycle. The tires were flat and it was sitting almost flat on the ground. Floors and trunk were very rusty, interior was very moldy, and it was parked due to engine problems.. He wanted $8K for the car, but unfortunately by that time it was a parts car. I offered him $1200 for it, mainly for the 4-spd conversion , tranny and rear end. The 4-speed cars are pretty rare, have only seen maybe a dozen in all of my years in the hobby. |

Yup, I've been making a lot of trips to Rochester in the last year and I look at it each time I go by.
