68 GTO axle coming out
My friends 68 GTO had an axle start to come out of the housing, it's a 10 bolt but there is no C Clip, is this normal? we haven't pulled the back cover yet, but the axle has not got a notch in it, what holds it in?
Cheers. |

They don't have c-clips, the flange on the axle tube secures the pressed-on bearings in place and that holds the axles in place.

That flange has 4 bolts to hold the axle to the housing from the outside. Whereas if the Chevy-style C-clip rear end (held in place within differential housing) were to break an axle during driving, the axle would simply slide out. If a BOP rear, then the axle is held in place by the flange in front of the rear drum backing plate.

If the 4 bolts and nuts are fastened okey then it`s the lock ring outside the bearing and the bearing started to move on the shaft?

Reading the OP, if bolt-in axle is trying to come out, it's the age old sealed axle bearing failure deal... the archaic sealed axle bearing, RW507CR in this case, has seized, the inner race has spun and chewed up the axle and now there is a clearance between the axle and the inner race, and the axle is now ready to depart the vehicle. Have answered this exact same situation on PY dozens of times. Its beyond sickening how many damaged '64-69 Buick, Olds, and Pontiac A body quarter panels have personally examined over the years that damage was a result of tire and wheel pulling out, usually during moderately low speed cornering. In every case, the expensive damage could have been prevented, by pulling the axles, removing the decades old sealed axle bearings, examining he axle mating area for wear, then either installing the axle retaining plate and new axle bearing, or doing so after replacing the axle with a good used one.

Another possible explanation is that the bearing retainer is slipping. This is common if the bearing was changed and someone just pounded in the retainer. Slight axle shaft wear from previous R&R will result in the retainer slipping.
