Default 326 HO

Not often that you read about the 326HO engine. Is it much overlooked by the bigger engines? Decent power for this "little" V8? Just curious.

The only reason I can see to keep one is for a numbers matching car. If you do want to run one and want more power, Butler sells a stroker assembly for 'em.

Not many 326 HO engines were ordered, probably because upgrading to the GTO package that came with a more powerful 389 or 400 didn't cost a whole bunch more.

They did make some pretty decent power, surprising a lot of GTO owners that came across a 326 HO at the stoplight.

This was over on the gto forum: HO is a recreation but neat that he went this route over a gto clone.

The 326 HO was a pretty good little engine. I had one in my Tempest Custom and got great gas mileage with it. Even whipped a few 327s with it. A few friends back up north in the early 70s put them in their GTOs when their 389s crapped out. I almost put one in my GTO when my 389 crapped out back in 2007. I didn't hear them complain at all. And no Peje, I'm not taking your post as a complaint. Actually it's a good question.

Just looking at a 326 you can't tell the difference from a 389.... unless you know exactly what to look for..... other than the 2 letter engine code being the main giveaway.

I know where there's one sitting in a 66 LeMans right now. The guy says it's brand new but the car is a piece of unrestorable junk from sitting. Not sure if they've run the engine but it's been sitting outside for quite a long time.

Biggest "visual" difference between 326 and 389 is the 326 has the pyramid shaped "transfer lug" projection cast on the top right rear end of the block, the 389 does not have this feature.

Ahhhh, I forgot about that Doug. And yeah, it is noticeable... if you know to look for it. Most don't tho, or like me don't even give it a second glance.

I've got one in my 66 Lemans along with the factory 4 speed. I really like it and a friend that has had many GTO's was surprised at the power. Mine is a #'s matching car.

As far getting a Lemans instead of a GTO I thought that insurance up charges for the GTO might be a reason for some of sales.

I used to own a 64 tempest custom 4 speed HO and a 65 le mans HO automatic ac car, both had respectable power for small displacement
