1972 FIREBIRD ESPRIT SEATS
I was originaly going to put 70 low back seats with custom made seat covers, my original 72 standard seats were sold with my 70 Esprit..cancel that idea...a few months back I got these 1972 Esprit deluxe comfortweave seats from a PY member...I know comfortweave was offed in 72 in a few colours, in addition to the deluxe perforated vinyl seat covers...when I stripped the seats down, I found this writing...does anyone think that this is writing from a factory level?..are these original comfortweave, they
certainly appear to be...opinions? |

As I recall......71 was the last year for Comfortweave.....on a bird,anyways......
72 Standard Trim was ALL pleated vinyl, same as 71. 72 Custom Trim had perforated vinyl inserts in seats and door panels. 72 Custom Trim with cloth was exactly that.....NO comfortweave...

72 COMFORTWEAVE
that's what I thought...however, I belive a 72 brochure shows the option...the red 1972 S.C.C.A. car has black comfortweave..also the door inserts match..the specil order black T/A 1972 has black comfortweave..perhaps some 72 owners can comment if they have comfortweave on a 1972

1972 seats
yes ...1972 had cloth inserts too, I forgot about that.. the 72 S.C.C.A. T/A. article states, $79 optional comfortweave ....this is confusing as he the PY member parted out a 72...look at the writing that I found inside after un hog ringing...any thoughts???

my original '72 deluxe covers had stamped numbers in them unlike the hand written print yours are showing and perforated smooth vinyl inserts. I remember seeing a date code as well that matched my cars build pretty close. Mine had a portion of the model number like 2U87X2 stamped in them. I'll look for the pics I took of the stampings tonight. With the '71 comfort weave and that hand writing in yours I'd bet they are either original covers from another car that someone swapped in or maybe some factory over the counter covers bought back when Pontiac dealers still carried them.

found the pics...
This one has a date at the lower line that is pretty faint but you can see it, reads "Date 11-19-71" (my car was an early December build) and here is the partial model number, not sure what the X48 means:

Also...don't forget that repro comfortweave seat covers have been available for at least 20 years....so they may have been changed out....

Having chased, dragged in, & parted in yards, many, many '71's & 72's over the last 25 year's have never ran across an original '72 Esprit or custom interior Formula or T/A with anything original custom interior wise, other than perforated or fabric inserts. My money, Glen is on your covers being early repro's. Have some original '71 black comfortweave covers that are coming off soon & I will get pics of the back sides. Comfortweave material... Have original comfortweave seats & covers out of '69 Bird, '69 GP, & 71 Birds. All are originals & were made with real comfortweave. In the mid 90's, removed the original comfortweave seat covers off several '70 Bird seats, both in black & in sandalwood. All of those '70 Bird covers were originals, but the original installed comfortweave resembled the FAKE comfortweave that PUI was forced to go with in around '95-96, after the last comfortweave looms were destroyed in the Kyoto Japan earthquake ('94).

Glenn,
the cloth inserts in the '72s were completely different than the vinyl Comfortweave in the '71s. Here is a pic of that car's interior (the red SCCA car): |

I honestly cannot tell in that photo...it looks like comfortweave and in the HPP article it states $79 comfortweave option... just curious though...I am going with the Legendary perforated deluxe covers so I suppose I am just a bit overly excited and was going thru some seat pix...I wonder how common the cloth inserts were..I would definitely like to see any others car interior pix with that option..thanks!!!...oh, and OL PINION, I remember an early Year 1catalog that had an early T/A on the cover and they actually had some decent GM N.O.S. parts for sale..70 to 73 bumpers,honeycombs,etc...and it said something like (a photo of an early T/A) perhaps you are lucky enough to have one of these in your garage!!!

Concerning the red '72 T/A, I used "comfort weave" as a generic term in the article, but the car definitely has cloth inserts.
More on that topic can be seen at http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=691497 |

1972 S.C.C.A. TRANS AM
thank you for that link!!..that is one nice and rare TRANS AM...not so sure about a column shift 455 H.O. but they are out there!..I remember when it was for sale at VOLVO AUTO, that was quite a deal...what are your thoughts regarding the special colour order 1972 black TRANS AM that is out there?...it looks as though that car must have the cloth inserts too...most likely no 72s with comfortweave....if any one is interested, Legendary can custom make 70 or 71 seats with real comfortweave if you provide them with the material..a PY forum member had it done!

1972 interiors
The white comfortweave seats in your pics are from a 1971. In 1972 the deluxe interior material changed to the perforated vinyl, with the rarely seen cloth material only available in black or off white as an added cost option. I have owned a couple 1972 cars in the past with the cloth material from the factory. Comfortweave was never available for 1972. The Black 72 T/A has the optional cloth material. If I recall correctly, the cowl tag shows 236 which decodes to the optional black cloth deluxe interior. And no, it is not even close to the 70-71 Comfortweave vinyl material. Completely different.

It is also worth noting that the 1971 seats were the same as 1972 seats - and actually the "base" seats & foams were used right up to 1977 - so it would be easy to see 1971 seats in a 1972, and think that they were original. I have only observed stampings on the inside of original seat covers, and would actually think thath the pencil written bit was either done at some point when the covers were removed (to be installed later on another set of seats), or at the time of fabrication (assuming that they were made to replace OEM seat covers).

1971 & 1972 SEATS
thanks for clearing that up...I did not see the car they came out of..the 72 writing and real comfortweave threw me off...I know 71 & 72 seat frames are the same as is the standard & deluxe foam on 71 & 72..but subtle changes in the later frames and I have not seen the glued upper foam on later seat frames...no comfortweave in 1972, only cloth insets..thanks!!

I'm glad I could help in some small way
I am unsure of some of the more subtle differences between 1971-1977 seat frames.
