1964 GTO NOS Sport steering wheel value
I just got this wheel today finally from a gentleman back east.....
the wheel is NOS and super nice and the horn button also ... there are a couple small items missing... 3 screws ..for the spacer bushing.. the horn button spring...and the horn contact and spring assembly,,, the rubber ring is there,, the cup it mounts on also and the nylon 3 holed horn button part........ it came with the original, but tattered, box....... shipped in dec66 ..by the date of the airmail stamp $3.55 ...to the gentlemans brother that I bought it from ,and stored in his dads house till this past month when I purchased it... he bought a 64 new in 65 and it got stolen in early 67 b4 the wheel was mounted... it took 2 months to get after he ordered it...so the story was told to me... what might be the fair market value on this ... I have offered it locally to a buddy with first right to refuseall..... thanks for any input.... still has the powder on the wheel from manufacturing..... never cleaned never mounted....... its a 9.9 out of 10 ....... thanks Scott any body seen an NOS one lately for sale ?? or the last 20 years ?? are the repops very nice/correct ?? IMO 1,100/1,500 easily.
Put that baby on epay and let it set it's own value!

I have had a lot of these wheels, and while some of them were of NOS quality, they were not NOS. The actual sale price on my nicer ones were $1500-$1700. The last extra one I have is nicer than all the others I have, including the ones on my cars.
That being said, I'm going to estimate $2400-2800. However if you can find 2 ego driven NOS fiends, I think $4000 and up. |

Question?? If the steering wheel is worth say, "$2,000", what would the auction value of the GTO it goes on have to be to justify putting a $2,000 steering wheel on it?

First off, no problem with this being in the Tech section; he's asking for value estimates, not trying to sell the part (except for the "serious offers considered part - delete that part and it'll be fine).
Secondly, about three years ago I sold a reconditioned wheel with chrome cap and emblem for $1745 on ebay. This NOS wheel should easily be worth over $2000, if not significantly more.

I'm with Andre on value. Had a chance at a couple NOS pieces years back and bought one, he wanted to hold on to the other. He showed up at the Portland swap meet last April and we started talking about his last one and I'm pretty sure it'll be coming available soon.

Guys, I know we have a policy of putting the price in all items 'for sale'. It's a good policy. Therefore it seems to make sense that some members frown upon people using the forums to 'fish' for a price to gain maximum value of a potential sale. If they are not going to 'fish' here, they can easily accomplish that on Ebay the ultimate 'fishing' tool. But we all signed up to help our fellow Pontiac member. If you don't want to help him because his motives are less than humanitarian, then don't help him. But if a member chooses to help the topic starter, then don't begrudge the topic starter for asking and don't begrudge the helper for giving the information.

No, the policy preventing an auction is still in place. Items posted in the 'For Sale' section must have a price.

I'm glad for the post. I don't own a '64, and have no use for this wheel. I think the story is fascinating, and I'm delighted to see pictures of such a rare item, and the original box. The history and documentation of these cars and parts is always interesting, in my opinion. I appreciate the OP for sharing it with us.

I purchased one this year that was very nice, but not NOS. The original asking price was $2500. I paid $2000. I would guess yours would be closer to $3000 - IF someone adds value to it being NOS.

I'm sure glad mine was in the car when I bought it and there's enough insurance on it to get it replaced if someone steals it . years ago I could have picked up one in the 800.00 range I thought they were crazy . Now who's crazy for not buying it then .

Don, if we could do the "go back in time thing" I'd save my newspaper route money and buy as many of them as I could back in 64. I think it was a $47 option or somewhere in that area if I'm not mistaken.

Here's my take on it and have no horse in the race. I would love to own a wheel like this and I have some old corvette nos wood wheels too. But the problem is is that once out of the box on a car it's just another nice wheel that can be had for 1500 bucks. A parts boarder would love to have it in the box and that's where it should stay but what a waste not to use it on a car..also whenever somebody does come up with a nice repro which will eventually happen the price of these wheels will drop like flys....you gotta know.when to hold them and when to fold them I guess.

And there you have it...
Put that SOB out on EPAY and be sure to post about it on every Pontiac site you know
May the best man win Man and I thought I paid a lot for my '66 "in the box" Sport Wheel $500 seems like a steal now. Cheers

C'mon Pecosbill!!! You know that $47 invested in 1964 with any decent return would yield alot more than an investment in a wood wheel :-)
I think a private "see it, touch it, feel it" sale will do better than Ebay. You have to find the right person with the right pocket size. Not sure if we have passed the top of the market for items like this one or not. My gut says yes, but I dont know too much |
