1971 YE With no vin or SR number
I have a chance to buy a 71 YE short block with a 485428 casting number, engine ID number, date code, 4bolt mains but it does not have an SR number or a partial VIN on the front of the engine. It does have the YE code stamped in the normal location. Is it likely a production line error or an SR without the SR? Whats it worth?

Whatever you are willing to pay.
Oddly, I have a 71 WC motor without a VIN on it.

Maybe it's not that unusual. Is there much difference in value between SR and regular production?

It is unusual, but they do show up. I would think it would be quite valuable to the right car too - like some of the 71 Judge Convertibles???
The value of that one would stand above any SR block or standard stamped YE block - once in the car it's hard to argue it's not original!

That makes sense. I'm going to try to buy it Sunday.

Is it bare metal on the face or painted ?
Production engine would at least have EUN where YE is stamped - at minimum. In bare metal it should be possible to determine if its virgin in the stamp zone - or tampered. Date code would play a role too. Have seen SR's stamped with (and without) many different variables. |

For what it is worth, I have a '70 WW block with the WW and EUN stamp but no vin.

Wow, it seems to be a lot more common than I thought.

If that's a legit block, it's worth a dollar or two!

I had one too, that had a late casting date. I wonder if that was a reason?

I have seen a couple of 69 WH RAIV blocks with no VIN # as well several other codes from this era.
Does anyone really believe that a UAW worker on the line in the 60's and 70's was infallible? Just think of the countless scenarios that would result in a block going unstamped! As far as 1oldgoat's topic is concerned, it is VERY likely a factory block that was left unstamped with a VIN#. Very desirable IMO. |

1OG, The seller *may* be dealing with a Fremont block. For some reason, partial engine VIN stamps were not typically in the "standard" location down by the timing cover. My HO engine ('71 YE) has the stamp up high, near the passenger head (see red box in the attached pic for approximate location). If it's crusty up there, he may be looking in the wrong spot. (Not implying all Fremont block stamped this way). Good find, regardless!!

My Freemont block is not completely stamped either. Not the entire vin.

The date on my WW block is L119. Not sure if that translates to December 11, 1969 or November 11, 1969. Somewhere I recall they skipped a letter in the date casting. I think it was "I".

In 67 they skipped the I, all other years used it. December 69 casting date - nice early block.
