Default 69-70 Fuel Tank Capacity

Does anyone know the true capacity of an original 69-70 GP fuel tank?
I put about 20.5 gallons in; I was driving the car home from the shop where I had the sender replaced. It ran out of gas about 200 yds from home.
(No big deal - I had about 4.5 gal. of 110 leaded with me.)
I put that in, went home and shortly thereafter drove about 2 miles to fill up, at which point I put 16 gal. in.

Do fuel tanks have any sort of date stamping or part number on them?
The tank on my car looks original - but after 4 decades I could be off.
Thanks - 69 GP 428 HO 4spd now operational!!!

I think the 69-70 GP tanks are 24 gallon.

Joe, I'm pretty sure the '69 & '70 is 21.5 gallons... '71 & '72 are 26. You may be able to fit another gallon or so by topping-off?

As far as a date... there is usually a large ink stamp on the bottom of the tank when new, but are usually badly faded on most original tanks. You may be able to gently clean the bottom of the tank to find it.

Have fun!

Thanks Grant!
Since my car was undercoated (Ziebarted) I'll assume that the fuel tank is correct.
I will obtain an original tank (condition not too important - just so it is sealed) and test the capacity. I'm already burning through 110 octane stuff - and at least my fuel gage is now working (jeez - these things don't get good mileage when you whomp on the throttle.....)

Hi,
There are two sizes of fuel tanks for 1970 GPs.
The normal or standard fuel tank is approximately 20 gallons Canadian or 21.2 gallons US. Unless you have a special order or a 1970 California emmissions car. they came with a 24 gallon Cdn or 26 gallon US tank, with all the ventilations assembly in the tank. I would assume that 69 were all the same size, since there was no California emmission systems in 69?
I learned the hard way, my 70 GP calif. emmissions car had the bigger tank, the original fuel tank was so rusty, it wouldn't hold air, so I threw it out!. It took my 2 years to find another one!
Hope that helps.
Dan
