Default A 1981 TA has a Factory Chevy 305 ?

Watching Mecum that is what the guy said. I have seen some TA's that had a 401 in it but a Chevy 305?

How many non Pontiac engines went into TA's?

I think that you had to have the 305 to get a 4 speed in '81.

The 305 was available in a Trans Am with the 4-speed. I was working at a dealer when they were new.

You asked about T/As with non Pontiac engines, not specifically 81, so from memory these are the engines and they years that had non Pontiac engines in T/As. I may be off a year or two here and there, however I believe it's fairly accurate.

1980 was the only year you could not get a Trans Am with a manal transmission. In 1981, a 4spd was offered but, only with a 305 chev. They also had their own shaker, etc.
With that said, the only year a 301 was offered in a TA with manual trans was in 1979 as a delete option.

Trans Am shaker callout stickers during the 1979-1981 years:

T/A 4.9 (301 Pontiac)
Turbo 4.9 (301T Pontiac)
T/A 5.0 (305 Chevy)
T/A 6.6 (400 Pontiac)
6.6 Liter (403 Olds)

I've seen a few T/A 5.0 shakers, but they're pretty rare.

I'm pretty sure a 350 Chev, 4 speed combination was available north of the border for 1980-1.

I bought a '79 Formula 301/4-speed parts car once. I've often wondered how many Formula's were produced that year in that combo. The body was shot, so I parted it out.

A friend from college had a '77 Esprit with a 305 Chevy and automatic. Chevy powered Firebirds from the factory were pretty common in this area.

Mike,
I spent a lot of time at Pontiac dealers in '79 and remember the 301 equipped TAs that year had no decal on the shaker. Did not see 4.9 decals that year on shakers. 80-1 yes but, not in 79.

A little over 1500 I believe - fun little cars but not fast.

One of my co-workers (at a Gm plant in Ontario) bought a 79 T/A with the 301 4-speed. That car had a "T/A 4.9" shaker decal.

I owned a 301 4bbl 4-speed 79 Formula, with a 2.42 Posi. Fun but not fast car, one of the worst mistakes I ever made was teaching my then Girl Friend how to shift her 305 4-speed Sunbird. She always beat me after that!!!!!

I recall that too back in 1979!

As my list shows, the callouts were used across the 1979-1981 years, showing all the different versions. They obviously didn't have Turbo 4.9's in 1979 either.

Back in the 1979-1981 era, we used to notice all the terrible placements of these shaker stickers. Some were placed way too far forward, some were placed way too high on the scoop. Seems like the assembly line workers had good and bad days.
