Default 71 GTO project in Finland

Mostly as a reader of this forum I thought that it's time for me to come 'out of the closet' and show what I've been up to during the past year

All started when I found a short ad in one local forum stated "For Sale: Complete car in parts". It was a 1971 Convertible GTO. Was not cheap but the car was here in Finland. This sounded like a more intresting project than a Mustang or Corvette, so I decided to take the challenge and 'build/restore' this GTO. Got the "car" [read: frame and chassis plus 2 dozens of boxes with parts] late January 2007 and since that, when I have some spare time, I'm on the project... Below is a link to my web -album, so if you're intrested you can visit the album.

http://picasaweb.google.com/johan.wu...GTORestoration

Comments and ideas are welcome!

I ordered the package from PHS and here is some info about the car:
1971 GTO Convertible
400 cid
TH 400 with column shift
Original color: Rosewood (only 250 of this color of the whole GTO production in 1971)
Black interior
Convertible top: Sandalwood
Rally II
HD radiator
KM speedo
On the factory invoice was also mentioned the Export preparation, $1.00

The customer mentioned on the invoice is GM Overseas Operations, NY. The car was probably shipped directly to Germany. First registration done in Münich.
I do not know the history in Germany (yet), but the car came to Finland in 2006.

More pics to come with the progress report

Thanks for the pics and the interesting story. Very nice work so far! Are you going stay with the factory colors or are you planning on something different? Keep us posted on your progress.

I will go for the factory colors. My intention is to have the orginal impression with some minor chanes, e.g. wider wheels and tires.

Wow, very nice. I would stay with the Rosewood too, it's a rare color.

Looks great. Good luck with your project and have fun with it. I am sure you will get a lot of looks in Finland with a car like that.

Welcome and congrats on a great find/project. The album and progress report are a great read, and as others have said, can't wait to see the finished product.

I promise that [if /]when I have the car ready I'll post a picture when I'm driving with the top down, when it is -30 degreed Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit)
...I almost wrote 'naked'... forget this !!
It's not so unusual for us (Finns) to jump out of the sauna (+250 deg F) into the snow or lake...

Thanks for all positive feedback. I'll keep you updated with the progress. I have not set ay deadline for the project; this is only a hobby for me, so be patient.

sevent2gto: I'm sure of the looks. As far i konw we have only 3 of '71 GTO verts here in Finland.

I always wanted to know with the export speedometer was there an external adaptor, a total different gear in the trans, or was the mechanics of the speedometer different themselves. I know they were kph or was just silkscreened different and that was it?

I just listed a Rally Clock on eBay today. I am posting this from my PDA, so when I can get to a real PC I will post a link.

I have a real nice '70-'72 GTO clock I will sell. Probably needs a rebuild but it's in awesome cosmetic shape. I need a '69 clock instead.

Overuld, yours is a '69 clock (blue numbers for the seconds) and I need one. What is the date code stamped on the back?

What does a rebuild mean when we're talking ablout a clock? I did not see the price tag in the picture. Perhaps you can put the price as a PM to me?

You have in your signature a T-37 Rosewood / Metallic. Do you have pictures of that?
I have not found any good pictures of Pontiacs with this Rosewood -color.

thx,

-johan
