Does anyone know the correct color band stripes that ara on the drive shaft of a 70 TA automatic? I can see where there were three stripes, but the color is gone.

No No No, that is not the color for the 1970 Trans Am's driveshaft stripes with the TH400 Transmission. They should be two brown and one orange stripe. Each stripe is 3/4" wide and 1/2" apart. They start 9" from the beginning of the tube portion of the shaft towards the transmission. Two brown then one orange.

This looks to be the matching colors but the position and spacing does not match what 70RAIII specified.

Thanks, Dens71TA. I should have consulted my service manual before asking. You never know what you will find in it!

Here is the correct strips for a 73 4-speed. I believe there are the same on a regular 455 car too!

Oh, I need to correct the above statement that mine are yellow, white, orange for a 73 stick car. Not yellow, white, yellow as I previously stated.
Looked at an old picture at it looked like two colors instead of three. Opps |

Brew, Thanks for the info. Are these assembly line stripes haphazardly painted with a brush? What kind of paint are these?
Do you or Bill know what the correct finish is supposed to be on the driveshaft? Thanks again in advance. FF |

No, the driveshaft stripes are one of the few, if not the only, paint marking on these cars that WASN'T haphazardly applied. They were nice neat well defined lines. My measurements have them starting approx 9 " from the end towards the tranny and are 3/4" wide with 1/2" spacings. Just use painters tape.I am sure it was lacquer, back then thats about all they used. The driveshafts themselves were bare steel. They almost always were rusting before the 1st owner recieved the car!! I always clean them to bare metal, apply the stripes then shoot the entire shaft with a satin clear coat to aid in rust protection.. Hope this helps.. Bill |

Sounds right on to me, but I prefer the natural look on the bare metal which means more maintenance. The bare metal parts need to be worked with Lube 6 or something to keep them maintained in new condition. It's also required that the storage unit (garage) needs to have A/C or dehumidification to prevent damage.
All depends on the restoration and how your going to use the car (drive or not to drive). Brew |

Thanks for the info guys. Would you recommend bead blasting to get to the original metal on a driveshaft or would that degrade the original look?
Thanks once again. FF |
