Default starter wiring shield tube

Can anyone tell me where that tube mounts? It has the two wires for the starter solenoid running through it. 69 Lemans, 350.
Thanks.

If I am not mistaken, I think that it mounts to the forward most drivers side cylinder head bolt. That bolt should have a hex head to torque to the cylinder head and also some threads above that so that you can secure the tube to it with a nut.

That tube will be straight, with a little tang for attaching it to the head bolt mentioned. The other style is a curved tube that attaches to the rear of the driver's cyl head. I use the curved tube, and it keeps the wires off the manifolds. I use heat tape on the wires then run them thru the tube, to shield them better from heat.

So only the pos battery cable runs through it?
I believe there were three wires in it when I disassebled it.

I took a pic, does this look right?
The forward head bolt is too far away for the wiring to reach.
As it is, it's still really tight getting it connected.

I gotta learn how to put pics in posts...

I think in stock engines, all starter wires went thru the tube. But that tube assy is the source of many electrical fires over the years. My car caught on fire once due to the wire melting inside the tube. Wire shorts to tube, tube grounded to engine block... You get the idea. Thats why many cars get the hot start solenoid mod, if stock appearance isnt important. Cuts power to the starter when not being started. So even if the wire melts, it wont cause a fire when running. Your length problems could be due to wire routing, or replacement of the pos cable with a shorter one. The cables usually do route as shown in your pic.

Cool Conventional mounting...

is between engine and exhaust manifold @ #5 plug. The Ram Air cars routed thru tube on front of engine and another mounted to motor mount...need to drill a hole.
