tag mounted on the pass side of tranny with a rivet, has a 2 letter code at bottom painted on, but should be stamped as well.

The last few digits of the VIN are stamped on the driver's side of the main case just above the pan rail.

I'll try and expand on this.

On the passenger side of the transmission will be the trans. code on a metal tag. It is silk-screened with a PF, PX or PQ (for 1970 Firebirds). It should also be stamped with the year (last two digits) - trans. code - serialized build number.

On the driver side, behind the shift bracket, is the partial VIN. It consists of the division, year, cars' build plant and last 6 digits of VIN (actually, first place and the last 8 places of VIN).
