1967 GTO rear window, still fix'n rust 3
Here we go with the typical rear window rust. I cut it all out tonight. and will start patching Saturday. I figure that I now have about 76 hour of work left until painting. 10 hours a week means about 8 weeks, unless I can get a day off work. I'll share the completed pictures as soon as I'm done.
I'll have to treat the rust on the framing under the panel, of course. |

Amazing that your rear window panel (between window and trunk lid) is not that badly rusted next to the bottom windo edge - or did you patch that already? I'm getting ready to replace that section on my 66 Tempest and will be looking for advice.

No, I did'nt patch it. The area had been "fixed" in the past with a piece that over lapped the panel by 4 inches or so. I cut the patch piece out. The support frame under the panel has some rust on it. The lower horizontal gutter has rusted out, and the corners are gone. Let me know how your project goes, I'll help with info if I can.

Here are some final pics from the panel install. I still need to grind the welds and minor filling. I'm not an "artisian"
Notes: The lip that turns up at the trunk, to hold the trunk seal, is part of the structure that is under the panel. The sides of the panel are spot welded to the body sheet metal from the inside of the "wings". I cut the panel just short of the weld edges and worked on removing the last bit of metal after the panel was off. This area is spot welded every 1.5 inches. Hard to cut out, imposible to drill out. I have now replaced the tail panel, trunk floor and fixed the rear window rust. I have the lower rear quarters, a small area on the driver front fender, the front hood edge, and the wheel wells to complete. I might survive this yet!!!! |

That is some nice work by you. Did you sandwich the insulation piece back in there like the factory did? The insulation piece is the one that is responsible for holding water like a sponge and rusting the under structure.

That's interesting. No, I did'nt see an insulation piece. Someone had tried to fix this area in the past. Maybe they removed it

Looks good. Seems like many of us have gone through this. Mine was worse so I got a piece from out west and welded in. It is a long hard road so hang in there!
