The letter "s".

The "j" was the standard GP while the "sj" came standard with the big motor, a 428 or 455 depending on year.

to my understanding

base g/p was just that, a base car and called the g/p.

model j was a higher trim level and may or may not have buckets ect.

sj was the sporty model, came std with buckets /console / guages / rallys / better suspension.

in later models an lj was also a trim pkg but leaned more towards a luxo pkg.

i'd look for an sj, they're nice rides.

According to factory literature all 69-72 GPs were either "J" or "SJ"

All I've seen and read agrees with what GPmodelJ70 says. In '69-'70 all GP's came standard with buckets/console. I'm not sure what the SJ package included for '69 other than the 428. For 1970 the SJ package included the "SJ" badging, lamp group, larger tires and the 455.

if this is the case then they didn't badge all of the "j" cars.

my 72 is a plain g/p, i've parted 3 just like it. bench seat, tilt auto on the column, a/c, rally2's, vinyl top.

no badging what so ever to indicate the model j like others i've seen.

i cut the roof off of a 69 that was badged as a plain g/p a few years back also.

Mike, I've seen many GP's that only had the "model J" badge on the console. I would guess that if you opted for the notch back bench that was a no cost option in '71-'72 that you didn't get the console or the badge that went on it.

Tony,

I have a 69 GP SJ for sale. The info and pics are posted in the 'Big Pontiacs for sale' forum under, 'For sale 69 Grand Prix' and 'For sale 69 GP / 64 GP' Have a look, prices are negotiable.

Thanks, 65gtonut

Most SJs had big motor and 12-bolt rear. Not all, but most. Even later, like '76, SJ had 400, LJ had 301 or 350 usually.

base model cars were the model j's, i believe. the Sj was a throwback to Duesenbergs J's, it was something DeLorean came up with. the S pretty much stands for Sport, L for Luxury. I think the Ljs came out when the body style was changed from the 69-73 body style(if my years are correct)

Cool "J"...

itself, was a Deusenberg model, with "SJ" being a supercharged model, I believe. Anyway, I always figured the "LJ" as "Luxury" model, as it typically had velour bench seats an all the bells and whistles with little regard to performance options. Not an original Deusy monniker, but it fit nicely in the program for GM. JMHO.
