I ordered a 69 Trans-Am stripe stencil kit through Performance Years. I received the the kit in 2 weeks and had my shop apply it to the car as it was finished with the whole white coat ready for the blue stripes to be painted on. MAJOR problems occurred using this stencil kit. To name a few, the consistancy of the stripe sizes were off from panel to panel particularly the trunk to rear window panel. Stencils were also labled wrong as some were marked left some right and vice versa. Then whatever parts of the kit they could use, the low tack stencil would lift up up in the middle and some ends of the stripes or stick and not come up. The stencil glue leached into the paint after application in some areas making the lines jagged. This did not happen in the areas where they masked the stripes out NOT using the kit Well the stencil kit was removed in little pieces using solvent in several areas and was literally a mess leaving me nothing to send back as asked by Pheonix (as per my complaint to them). The shop I used is one of the best in the business with many years behind them in restoring top notch classics. The 4 guys who worked on the stripes wrote up what had happened. They have used many graphic companies before but their experience with problems like this has only occurred on old heat damaged stencils. Needless to say the $220 (including shipping) dollar kit I bought to make appling the stripes easier to put on and save time and money ended up costing me 1,800 dollars and wasted time. Now I am trying to at least recoup my money for the kit. So, basically I am out 2,000+ due to this product. I advise anyone who is going to do a 69 TA to think twice before buying this kit. In all honesty, my friend had used this kit and did not have any problems but I do remember that there were problems from some other users on this board. Any one having any knowledge of problems with this kit, please email me. Thanks

10 plus years ago, i had a conversation with the guy that represented Phoenix Graphics. That alone kept me from ever purchasing their products. Over the years i have had the opportunity to see PG products applied on a variety of trans ams. "Exact reproduction"...HA, i don't think so.
Stencils and Stripes is the way to go.

I asked Phoenix about reproducing the stripes for my Grand Am:
"We could offer that if we had a set to copy." ![]() "I could lend you my NOS set." ![]() "Sure, that would be great! Can you send it to us?" ![]() "OK, but when do I get it back?" ![]() "There is no guarantee that you'll get it back!" ![]() End of conversation. http://fiedlerh.home.att.net/

Sorry to hear of the problems with the stencil kit. I bought a full T/A kit for my 76, and it all went on very well, the bird looks really good.

I just put on the Judge stripe kit on my '70 GTO. I put them on myself using their slip-on gel. Initially there were bubbles, but as they told me on the phone, they went away after several days. The instructions said dont push too hard when you squeegy, but you do need to push hard to get the best results. I love the way they look and I'm happy with the quality.

I bought a complete package from them two years ago for my 75 T/A. My friend owns a sign shop and he completed the installation. The hood bird was a little difficult to handle due to it's size. I am very happy with the quality of the product.
Sorry to hear you had problems with the '69 kit. I hope you get things worked out. Thanks PERFORMANCE YEARS PONTIAC for your contributions to our race series! www.outlawpontiacs.com |
