Where does this nipple connect to, the tank has a breather on the filler spout, and this one leaks fuel when the tank is full. Can I just plug it? Thanks

I may be having the same problem. Looking to just replace the tank but curious to see what response you get. Also, any chance your car is an EEC California car?

This car came from MI, and sold in WI. this was a new GM tank, it still has the GM part number sticker on it under the undercoating.

Do not plug that hole. It's a necessary vent to ensure the fuel supply isn't interrupted by a vacuum inside the tank. The vent in the filler neck isn't sufficient under WOT conditions. There are really 2 reasons to ensure the tank is properly vented: To prevent fuel starvation, and to prevent the fuel tank from being collapsed due to vacuum forces. Of the two, I only have firsthand knowledge of fuel starvation.

If I recall correctly, the hose ID is about 1/2" and simply extends from this vent tube vertically up to the bottom of the body. There is a little tab attached to the body which holds the top of the vent tube. The idea is to move the top of the vent tube as high as possible above the tank.

Originally, the vent tube had a special material similar to a brillo pad inserted in the end, and secured with a single large staple.

I would assume this material would prevent fuel from sloshing out under severe braking forces.

You can fabricate a similar "filter" by using steel wool or something else that is fuel proof and still breathes. You could then utilize a large staple to fix it into place.

That tank appears to be a 49 state, non-EEC tank.

Close up shot.. sorry if it's a bit fuzzy. Also, it looks like it's attached with a 5/16" sheet metal screw:

Thanks Ghost, I saw that bracket when I was under there last night. Thanks for the info & pics. I wish I had known about this before I dropped the tank, oh well. Good time to clean the pick up.

So the conclusion was that you were missing the hose?

Lance, I had the same exact problem.. fuel spilling when full. Installation of the hose cured it.

Thanks Matt, I've have trouble with mine too. My hose is rotted, but I never worried about it since it was a vent. I've just not been filling up the Goat to the top to avoid this.

Original hose is about 9-1/2" long. I've used a piece of the valve cover to air cleaners' breather material, cut to place in hole and the staple will keep it from moving around. Picture shows original material (in brown). California emissions tank is totally different.

Ugh, I have an EEC tank! Guess this wasnt' my problem. That hose actually goes to something on my car as i found out last night. What all that is I don't know. Back to replacing the tank.

Did find something else interesting, a wire to wire connection hanging from the same area without tape or cap of any type. Is it bad to have an exposed wire where gas is possibly leaking from? Good lord!

Bringing this one back from the dead! i have the same problem with the tank spilling over when full and I'm sure this is the issue. What are people using for the insert at the end of the line? I saw a picture of it in this thread:
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...=gas+tank+vent

...but don't see it in the PY catalog. Inline tube lists what appears to be the correct part for $22:
http://www.inlinetube.com/New%20Prod...%20Pontiac.htm

Do you just connect the single 1/2" hose and leave other two nipples open? I assume the sponge/filter is located within the plastic housing? I still have to see the clip is present on the underbody of my car.

Here’s a couple pictures of my gas tank. The first one is how it was – it did have the rubber line, but not the filter on the end and I’m thinking the line just didn’t run high enough. In the second picture you can see I just clamped on some compressor fittings for now with some steel wool stuffed in before I put the final nipple on. This should do the trick until I track down the proper filter.

Whatever Inline Tube is trying to sell you, it's incorrect for a '70. Again, just cut some material from your old valve cover to air cleaner breather filter (it's time to change it out to a new one right) and stuff it in the hose.

Thanks for the tip - I see I missed that when reading through the first time last night. After another look through the pics provided, I figured out the main problem with mine is the bracket was mounted sideways (pointing downwards so the hose went horizontally towards the DS of the car). The bracket appears as though it should be mounted facing the PS of the car so the hose points straight up.

First pic is how my hose/bracket was mounted, second pic is the hose removed with the breather filter stuffed in and secured with a couple staples, third pic is hose reinstalled.

Thanks for your help!
