I'm thinking about changing my points dist. for an electronic in a 66 GTO 389c.i.
Can I use a set up from another GM? If so from what year and engine size? Thanks in advance for any help. will the HEI dist. affect my Tach?

Most people like the looks and clearance of the period correct points dist.
What I do for most is convert the points inside to electronic and rebuild & curve the dist to customers specs on my dist machine.
I would suggest the same.
There are a few other here on the board who do dist work like Rocky & Bob.
PM if interested
Jeff

I would keep the settings stock. Will this interfere with my tach. It is an aftermarket one I purchased from Ames.

You got an HEI from Ames?
I believe you can get or it comes with a resistor wire you can put inline if tach does not respond correctly.

You're flushing power and fuel economy down the toilet.

The centrifugal and the vacuum advance should be optimized for the engine the distributor is being used with.
