Default Tach speedo lens removal

Trying to remove the lens on a 70 TA and having a problem with the clock adjustment shaft, There is a steel part of the shaft that is a larger diameter than the rest of the shaft so that the lens hole is too small to slip over the shaft. Does anyone know if this thing is supposed to unscrew off the shaft?

In my 70 Formula with a tach, I had to remove the adjustment knob from the end of the shaft in order to remove the lens. If you are refering to the adjustment knob,? I pulled out on the shaft and then held the shaft with a pair of long nose pliers, I then unscrewed the knob with my fingers. In newer T/As there is a small set screw holding the knob to the shaft. Hope this helps.

My clocks were all smooth, no threads where yours has that thick part. Are you sure it is steel? Looks like really old, hard rubber. I'd bet it just slides off. I wonder if that bit that is on there is stock. 1970 had a lot of one year weirdness.

I came across one that also had a small piece of rubber over the shaft, but not quite that long of a piece. Might have been done by owners to keep dust, lint and crud from getting past the shaft into the area with the gauge faces. I know I've had cars where stuff got into that area and it drove me nuts.

/\ /\ I'm guessing 'TA455HO' nailed it;

I was going to suggest that you do a closer inspection, as I was guessing it was a hardened piece of rubber or plastic added by a previous owner.

I looked through sections U and W of the assembly manual and while it shows the two-piece knob there is nothing there that looks like that extra piece so I'm just thinking it was added.

Ill fool with it again tonight. It is very hard and possibly is metal as it doesnt seem to scratch when I try to twist it off.

the two piece knob is just that - the knob;
the bottom half slips over the squared base of the shaft, and a "flower" top piece is what threads onto the end of the shaft.

Later knobs were also two piece, but quite different in construction and function;
These ones are black, and reveal no screw head;
The later ones were silver, and had a screw head to lock it in place.
