Default Carb Question

I have a 428 bored 30 over, lunati 490 lift cam, torker manifold, Dougs headers, Pypes exhaust and a edelbrock 1405 600 carb. My question(s)....it seems that the car is starving for gas, I have tried tuning the carb according to the manufactures specs. but really can't get the idle right. It will start off idling well and then seems to go to low idle after a short time. When I punch it sometimes it leaves hard and other times it does not. Do I need more carb? Am I missing something in adjustment? Any suggestions would help. I bought this motor already set up with about 20k miles on it and the guy really could not give me much info on the build. Thanks

That is the probably cause of your issues, and it is small too. Swap to a Holley or a properly setup Qjet.

I'm not a carb guru, so I like the Holley Avengers. For most combos, they run fairly good right out of the box, and usually require only minor adjustments. A 770 would probably do you well, or maybe an 870 since you're running a Torquer.

The Edelbrock is not enough carb for that engine. Plus there is the intake, does not match well with the cam (I'm running the same cam in my 400) and this cam is not the best selection for a Pontiac. This cam works best with a stock iron intake (68-71) and a properly set up and tuned Q-jet. You failed to mention what heads are on the engine with will also have an effect on performance on the engine. Also you failed to mention what ignition your using and how much initial timing and total timing your running. All of these factor into how the engine performs.

I agree but if you go Holley get one that features 4-corner idle....usally Street Advengers don't have that.

They just added four corner idle adjustment to the Avengers, and came out with the aluminum Avengers. The aluminum ones also have glass bowl sites too. The aluminums are the same price as the 'regular' street Avengers. For $100 more you get the Ultras. I recently priced a 770 and they can be had for about $380, and the Ultras for $490.

If you order one, I suggest getting the aluminum one, so you don't get old stock. If you get old stock on the regular Avenger, you may not get the 4-corner.
