Default Correct finish for upper control arms on '74 T/A

What is the correct finish for the upper control arms on a 6/74 build '74 T/A? I just cleaned off 33 years worth of grease off a set and I can't find any evidence that they were ever painted. I know GM got too cheap to paint them later on but I didn't think that was the case as early as 1974. Once I got all the grease off they are still soild rust and look like they have been rusting since new. There is no "paint line" from being dipped into a 60% semi-gloss black paint dip tank up to just before the ball joint like I have seen on earlier F-bodies.

Anybody got an unrestored low mileage example to look at or remember from when they were new?

There suppose to be natural metal finish just like the rest of the system.

Interesting. When was the last time GM painted the upper control arms, 1972? NJSteve posted some nice pictures from his '72 T/A that documented the paint dipping process. I wonder how many cents GM saved by NOT painting the upper control arms ...

There are several documented cases of upper control arms being painted on 74 T/A's. There is a fellow here in Michigan that has an 8700 original mile 74 SD car and his are of the dipped variety. The "Bar None" T/A that was documented in HPP a couple years ago also had dipped upper arms.

I prefer the all painted look myself but it seems it is not correct.

Referring back to my Z28 (September '73 build), the upper arms were definitely painted semi gloss black while the lowers were natural (rust). I'm not sure if the dip ended at the ball joint or not but it probably makes sense.

My Nov. built '74 Formula has both uppers and lowers black. I'll have to check the Feb. built one.

The cars I'm using are both June of 73 and upper and lower are natural.
It appears there where many changes on these and all parts over a period of time long and short.
This is why it pays to investigate many resources before changing anything on ones car.

The lower control arms on this car still had some black paint and the dip line next to the ball joint. I guess I'll do black for the lowers and natural for the uppers. Thats the way it looks like it came from the factory.

I know this is a old thread but I just wanted to to state that I found black paint on the control arms of my may 74 build superduty that I got from the original owner and was sitting since about 1980 or so.
