Default 73 Ram Air Formula 400?

Did they make a Functional Ram Air 400 in 73? Are there any tricks to tell if it is a real RA car without PHS?

I believe Ram Air was optional on any Formula in 1973.

I have a '73 Formula with factory ram air. It's easy to add the option, so I would recommend ordering the PHS.

Thanks. Also, can you tell me where the part number is located on the RA breather?

Here are some pictures of the original air cleaner before I had it powder coated. I'm not sure if it has a part number on it. I'm not near the car, so I can't check that now.

dreamn69, does it have the "Keep your GM" decal on it still?
Do you have a picture of the underside of it?

1969 Ram Air, did you keep your decal? If so, do you think I can use it to make repros? Also, when was your car built?

Default 73 Ram Air Cleaner

HFR I just purchased a 73 455 RA Formula a few months ago. It will be a couple of days before I go to the storage building, but I can get a picture of it for you. It is a 27,000 mile car so it should still have it on it. Rick

Sorry, I can't have it made from a picture, I need the original.
And, does your air cleaner have the style clips shown in the pictures above? Would like to know the build date of yours too, after figuring out what clips were used.

And, here is my old repro decal (made myself, just not accurate).

Held for Ransom - I reapplied the decal to the powder coated air cleaner. I'll have to check the build date of the car.

Note: I believe 400 and 455 RA air cleaners are different.

Saw your invoicing, looks like late April build.
Where did you hear there were 2 different RA air cleaners for '73?

I can't recall, and I could be incorrect.

I've never heard anything about there being two different ram air cleaners in 1973. I know there were two different ram air cleaners in 1971 & 1972, one for round port engines and one for D-port.

There were two different style of clips used on the underside of '73 Ram Air air cleaners, but I don't think it was applicable to what engine was installed.

Mike,
I've got a couple of donor air cleaners you can take them off of.

All the 455 air cleaner will have 2 Hot air Therms, ( vacuum flappers in the snorkel, WU3 or Not, and till 1976) with 2 heat riser tubes, where the 400 cars only had one, and therefore only one heat riser tube. This also means that the vacuum system is different and some of the clips on bottom may not be present on a 400 air cleaner sub assembly. On a 455 unit only one side works( fresh air) AFTER engine is warm. Once the 455 is all warmed up the other snorkel "Can" operate, but only at WOT....'72 is set up this way as well. On a 400 car, the Heat riser "SIDE" only works at WOT after warm up, while the other is "free air" . keep in mind the 400 was a hotter engine.
This info is NOT new , has been discussed, and youll see it in your service manuals
