Default Volvo reliability / issues / questions

Probably not the best place to ask this, but thought I'd give it a shot. My wife's aunt passed away this last Jan and her 2002 Volvo S80 has been sitting all this time. It's only got 42K on it and it's in fairly mint condition. I am / was considering buying it from the estate but don't have much first hand info on Volvos regarding reliability / repair costs, etc. Anyone have any input they'd care to share? Thx in advance for any info.

Randy

do a tranny service, and the biggest issue is the odd PCV system, which is under the intake. It can clog easily and its a plastic type part that bolts to the crankcase. The Alt can cost money.. but its a reliable car . People keep them forever

The non turbo cars are a lot more reliable.

Can't offer much on the S80, but my kid bought a 1997 850 with 250K miles and the car is still going and drives nice. Car has lived its whole life in Maine and no rust which counts for alot in my mind. Timing belt service has always been srtrongly recommended for the older cars, you could check out the Volvo forums for more insight- though those forums can't hold a candle to this one.

S80s are a nice little car.... I say go for it seeing it has such low mileage. Enjoy.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll have to admit it's a pretty nice car and the low mileage makes it very tempting. I did some additional searching on the net and it seems that this vintage S80 is also prone to some electrical issues. Think I'll probably pass just based on that.

IMO;everyone that I know that bought a Volvo that was not a fellow tech was plagued with picky problems.
I do not miss working on them or paying for replacement parts.
I don't think you'll regret not keeping it.
