Value of a SD 455 Block
I have a lead on SD 455 block. Apparently an SR block and the guy that has it, bought it new from the parts department at a local dealer back in the day. He used it short term in a fast street car and then put it in storage. Std. bore bare block. I have not done a visual inspection yet and I don't know if it's a 73 or 74. My question is how much is this block worth in good condition.

73 and 74 SD Blocks are identical other than date codes.
The service replacement is the same but the date code could be anywhere. Mine is J197 so they were made at least up until 77. Price would depend on how complete it is as if you have to replace items like heads, intake carb or distrubutor they will cost you. It should have SR 81890 stamped down bottom of the block front left side. Block should be Vinless Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

One of my friends gave out my contact information to a guy looking for a 74 SD455 automatic engine. He has an original SD455 car that is missing its original engine. I have a fairly well optioned 74 T/A SD455 automatic that is rough and partially taken apart. It has the numbers match Y8 short block assembly and SD455 heads. I offered to sell him the complete car for $15K, but he only wants to pay $10K for just the engine. I declined his offer, he's increased it to $11K. He's been looking for an engine for a couple of years now. He's found a couple that were priced in the teens, but he moved too slow or passed on them.
$14K is pretty steep for just a short block, but Ebay shows it has 41 watchers. |

I'd love to buy an SD455 block for $4k
We sold a really nice used SD block back in 2014 for $7500. That block is living in a 1973 4-speed SD455 TA now.
It was a bare, service replacement block with standard bore and factory main caps. I think (but it's kind of a fuzzy memory) that it was dated in late 1974. The price of the long block on eBay is a bit optimistic, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone stepped up and bought it for somewhere near $10k. I haven't seen a SR SD455 block for sale in quite a while. Has anyone else? |

I have seen very few SR SD455 blocks.
I have a SD455 block with no numbers at all, no SR #, no factory VIN, nothing. It was in a 72 Trans Am 4-spd that came from the WV area back in the 1980s. It had the typical WV rust from salt and wasn't worth fixing at the time, so I took it apart. The motor consisted of a complete SD455 short block assembly with a 72 455HO top end. The owner claimed that he blew up the original 455HO plus a second SR 455 block during the warranty period. After the last engine blew he complained so loudly to the dealership that they installed a SD455 short block in his car. Luckily that engine survived his heavy foot. The distributor was a SD455 unit with 73 production dates, and the block had the correct pistons and rods. I would have expected it to have some type of stamping on it, so I'm guessing that maybe the short block assembly may have been one available for purchase over the parts counter. Has anybody ever seen a SD455 block with no stampings anywhere? Mike |

No, it's greased up and wrapped in plastic for storage. It's in storage a couple of hundred miles away.

I now have this SD 455 block in my possession and I am open to offers if anyone is interested. It is in very good condition with a standard bore, and good main bore/caps. It has been stored a long time, and it has some surface rust in a few areas that would require a small (.030) bore increase and maybe .010 off the deck. Pretty much standard in any engine build. Block cast #490132 Casting date is C294. Stamp where VIN is usually at is SR8 7070. I can send pics to anyone interested.
