4spd speedo cable routing
I have this posted in the 70-73 section, ref: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...41#post5593041
So how many people have seen the speedometer cable routed underneath the transmission and how many have seen it routed over the transmission? Just trying to get a sense of which way is correct?

I posted this over there!
When I got my 74 SD 4 speed car it had the cable mounted over the transmission. Can't state whether it was correct or not. I can ask the question "why would you change the routing if it was originally under?" Brewster's 73 SD 4 speed, which was a meticulous concourse restoration, had it mounted under and clipped to the dust shield. That always made me wonder if mine was wrong. I never changed it.

My Car (Original 73, 4 speed) is over the Trans, and this is confirmed in
GM's 73 Assembly Manual. On Original 4 speed Cars there is a welded on clip on the Drivers side Trans Tunnel, and a bolt on clip (retainer) on the Trans Mount Bolt (passenger side) that allows the Speedo Cable Run over the Trans then loop into the speedo Gear to avoid binding the Cable. The Welded Clip on the Drivers side, if you look at it is to keep that Cable away from the shift linkage. It may be gone, and even if so, a small square welded tang should remain, and allow you to properly locate a new retaining clip. I can't say this is correct for any other year, but I also can't imagine GM would run any Cable across the bottom of the Car, for obvious reasons. Even Brake and fuel lines that run across the Car are either protected by the Frame, or shielding on the lines. Nothing that could be caught or pulled would be correct in my mind. Now a 74 uses both the Muncie or an ST10 depending on the build date, so this could easily have changed with the change to the ST10 in 74 but I would bet it's the same for all 4 speeds with the speedo gear entry on the passenger side. |

My 73 T/A had the cable over the trans. I got this car from the 2nd owner same family & the trans & or engine had never been out fro any reason & it had only 64K on it when I bought it. The cable on it was over the trans & was routed through the welded tab on the floor pan & through a loop at the trans mount on the right rear corner of the mount.
