1970 12 bolt axle tube welds
About to rebuild a buddy's 1970 12 bolt from his Formula.
Had a leak all its life so its amazingly clean. Take a look at the leak. Think I should MiG weld this all up, brass, or ? Have tiny holes at edges before, but not this. |

I had my 8.5 tubes welded. After researching it it made sense to me to have it done professionally. The cast center and steel tubes need to be welded with a nickle rod. There is a high chance of warpage so a fixture should be used. I think your suppose to pre-heat everything and a slow cool down process.

I had an 8.2 with a leak in the same place...cleaned it up real good and used black silicone...never leaked again.

J/K but it will work though. If they are gonna drag race it then the welding with nickel needs to be the whole circumference of the tube to the iron carrier where it transitions on each side since on leaf cars hooking with traction bars sometimes the who center breaks loose and pivots the snout up on the launch

Worked for Pontiac when those cars were new. Saw several with bad welds at the axle tubes. They actually turned the tubes in the center housings. I would recommend getting the whole thing welded professionally
