PHR MARCH/1971 THE 'NEW' 455 H.O. crate engine slides easily into your "OLD" Bird or GTO to liven it up, Milt Schornack turns the wrenches. I found the reference interesting on the 4th page caption under the pic of the two connecting rods - "super duty rods" ...don't know what they are referring to as the 455H.O. rod isn't anything special and the SD 455 rods are still two years away...what are they talking about?

in the early 60's there was a forged super duty rod used in some of the 421's. until the 73-74 SD rod came out, they were the go to if you could find any. there was a later run of them, but at this time cant remember exactly when it was. hopefully someone with knowledge will chime in.
better ad that there were other forged rods, but these were heat treated and stronger than those known as rubber rods.

Man that article is timely / funny. Seems some Esprit owners might think that way. "Gee whiz, golly jeepers, a 455HO is dimensionally same as a 350"..... while slapping knee and scratching chin at same time.
Re Rods: I used to read of forged factory mystery 389 rods...... SD? RE HO Begging: anyone have an AC, HO dipstick tube to help the needy?

Look at it this way, think about the Esprit owner that started with a '70 400 2bbl car. Already has a TH400 and 12 bolt rear. Drop in an HO! What a sleeper!

455 ho carb question
Just saw a 1972 704227 carb on ebay. supposed to be good but missing air horn. Is the air horn for this carb something that is available or is it one of those impossible to find parts that I always seem to need? If available does anyone know the approximate value. I need this carb for my 1972 TA build. If it matters it is an automatic carb. Thanks Ken

Any brave souls here fill their cross-over holes as the article suggests? 10-12hp gain? HO project in early stage, parts being ordered. Going with a streamlined application, no heat riser to air cleaner, and have been wondering on cross-over drivability impact without.
If anyone has an A/C oil dipstick tube for HO I need one THX.

I would be all over that carb at that price if I thought I could find another correct air horn for it. be sure the air horn you get has the upper IDLE AIR BLEEDS like the HO carb in the pic I posted. I'm pretty sure 71 & 72 HO carbs are just alike. The pic is a '71 7041268 Note: The two tiny holes in the air horn on each front barrel. The larger of the two are the main air bleeds (right next to the slotted screw). the other small one is the IDLE AIR BLEED! the air horn you need has to be just like that. Some quadrajets have the idle air bleeds in the bowl casting. '71 & '72 HO carbs do not. They are in the air horn. I'm thinking the 7042270 should be right for your automatic car. The '72 HO aficionados here will correct me if I'm wrong. Don't hold me to the following, but I think....the difference between '71 HO TA's & '71 HO Formula's is the 67 & 68 carbs are for the TA's and the 70 & 73 carbs are for the Formula's with Ram Air. Note the even last digit is for auto cars and odd last digit is for the manual cars. To my knowledge, there were only two different carbs for '72 Firebird HO cars. There is only the 7042270 for the '72 automatics and the 7042273 for the '72 manual/4-speed cars. I suspect those two carb options cover the TA's and the Formula's depending upon their transmission. You need to verify this yourself. NOW, if you have to have the correct numbers matching air horn , good luck brother.

Hello maxilo,
I see you are new to the forum. Welcome to the all things PONTIAC world. The 1971 model 455HO engines are the ones with the 197 heads. The 1972 model 455HO engine has the 7F6 head. If you are interested in a complete 197 head engine, occasionally someone has one to sell. They are pretty scarce though and usually fairly expensive. I suspect you mean renewed (as in rebuilt) instead of reviewed. May be a little translation thing going on there. Where in the world are you?

I can only surmise that you must own a '71 Pontiac Firebird that originally came with the 455HO engine. I assume you are looking for another one to put back in your car? Since it won't ever be a number matching engine for your car, do you have any preference as to whether it is for a 4-speed (WL or WC code) or an automatic (YE code)? The best advice I can tell you is to browse right here (70-73 Firebird & TA Tech_455HO Forum) often. Just about everybody here will copy and paste a link from eBay or wherever we see 455HO stuff for sale. Probably not a lot of Pontiac parts available in Holland? Here's some parts on eBay here in the states. I'll PM ya if I see a complete engine for sale. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PONTIAC-421-...dV10Mw&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-pontiac...tUnFP3&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Pontiac...1Ww7KU&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/68-74-Pontia...xUdjDG&vxp=mtr Post a pic of your car.

As originally produced as '71 455 HO engines, there are
- 3 different 2 letter block codes, - 3 different block casting codes depending on date cast - 2 different styles of 197 casting heads, early and late... - very expensive 455 HO specific Quadrajets that never go with an engine - an expensive distributor, that came in 5 production dates. ...and there's more Consideing what factory round port engines go for in nice rebuildable shape, Maxilo, you probably ought to be more specific with what you believe you need.

"ol Pinion head is right Maxilo,
Unless you are absolutely dead set on having everything 100% 455HO, I would consider building any complete 455 that is rebuildable. Hang a good set of forged rods and pistons on the crank. If you still want to go with a set of HO heads & intake, you could.Putting an HO engine together a piece at a time is cost prohibitive for most of us. Not having the original (born with) engine knocks the value off about 15%. But, putting in a numbers & date correct HO engine won't put you back in @ the top price either. It's not the original. NO CIGAR! If it's just a want to thing, It's your money. You can have a neck snapping 400+ HP engine for considerably less than what you will spend on true HO parts. The last complete used 455HO I saw for sell was more than 5 years ago and the guy wanted $9,000 US dollars for it. It was probably a pieced together engine. The date codes were all over the place on it. You asked if I will help you find a 1971 455HO engine. I will, if that is what you really want?

Maxilo, here is an engine I remembered seeing a few months ago on a youtube video in England, not sure if he'd sell it separately but it was an extra engine so might be available? The engine comes in at about the 5:00 minute point of the video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8cZW8jfZqM
