Default 79 Formula

I'm looking at maybe picking up a 79 Formula parts car, it's a 301 4 spd. The motor is gone, but I was wondering what rear end it might have? Seller said it has 4 wheel disk brakes and a posi. Were the 301 4 spd cars limited to a few ratios or were all the ratios available? Car is currently sitting behind a barn for a long time, just wondering if its worth the effort to part it out. Thanks

I've owned a few 79 T/A 301 sticks....and they BOTH had 3:08 posi's

one WS4 and one WS6.

If the original ST-10 is still there...it has an interesting first gear....

The 1979 Formulas with the 301 4-speed combo received the 3.08 gear, with no optional ratios. The automatic 301's received the 2.73 gear, and the California automatic 301's had the 2.41 gear.

Why would you be considering to part it out & why wouldn't you repair it & put a new engine in it & then drive it. Is the body bad enough that it can't be restored?? Any 400 or 455 will drop right in the engine bay & then you'll have a real screamer.

Yes the original trans comes with the car, what would the 1st gear ratio be?

I won't rule that out, but the seller said the car has been parked outside for about 25 yrs. He said it was rusty but I haven't seen the car or any pictures yet.

Another question (which I do not know the answer) is if the Trans is a Super T-10 like the '78 & '79 400 4-spd cars? If so, that'd be another drivetrain peice worth some $$$ when you part it out.

P.S.: If you buy it do whatever you want w it, disregarding any "armchair" Internet dictators or quarterbacks. They only made around 347 400 4-spd '79 Formys...which this car IS NOT one of, regardless of how much $ you pour into it. If it's a rusty roach - part it or pass on it.

MOST 75-79 T/A's (4 speeds) came with a Super T-10...with a 2:64 or 2:88 low gear...basically an enhanced "wide ratio"....

79 301's and 81 305's came with an ST-10 with a MONDO 3:44 low gear.....which made the little motors launch like they 4:56's in the back.

It was basically a poor mans 5 speed with that combo of trans and rear axle gears...with NO 3rd gear.....

1st and second were matched...as were 3rd and 4th.....but the 2-3 jump was HUGE...and it dropped you right OUT of the race.

The input shaft should have NO grooves cut into the clutch disc splines...that is the easiest way to identify....There will ALSO be a 2 letter code stamped on the case....I have the list here somewhere...if you find it..

2 letter code will also be on the build sheet transmission box.

I have 2 of those trans out of 305 cars. 1 was an aluminum case and the other is a cast iron case. by the way, funny the 305 I parted had a 3.42 posi rear gear.

A working one...with no housing damage or broken teeth should easily be worth $500...I'd say...

Bell housing with no damage...$75

Looks like one that was here locally for years - sat behind a house right off route 84.

The owner of the garage is a friend of mine - when I pulled into the station to check it out his comment was...."I knew all I had to do was bait the hook & you would be in!"
