Question Gas tank repair question -

I ran over something in my 4wd Dakota and the gas tank is now leaking slightly at the bottom. It's just a old wood hauler kept on the property and I don't want to put any $$ in it; has anyone tried using JB Weld or A fuel tank repair that NAPA sells with good results ?

JB weld. Drain the tank, Dry the repair area after some breakclean to clean it. apply the JB and let it set up 24 hours. Should last longer than the tank.

There is an Epoxy type product that you can use, I forgot the manufacture, but you will need to remove the tank to be able to clean and coat the entire inside if it. I think I found out about it on a Motorcycle forum.
It might of been a POR product, IIRC.

I bought this stuff at an auto part store the other day, comes in a clear box, hangs on a hook at the part store. Anyway, it came with a two part epoxy in one envelope, a little piece of sand paper, a piece of what looks like fiberglass roving and an acid brush. You squeeze the envelope containing the two part epoxy causing the two to mix within the pouch. Cut it open with scissors and use the acid brush to apply. I have to say it worked great. I looked for box but the trash went out already. It was $12.00 though. BTW no tank removal, no coating inside, this is done entirely from outside. Stuff cures in mins, work fast!

Sand or wire brush the area around hole, wipe it down. Mix some bondo up with a lot of hardener in it and spread it on a piece of saran wrap or wax paper. Push it in to the hole and hold it until it sets up and your done.

I've fixed them with gas in the tank, of course if it's not running out your chances are better for it to stick. I've done a few and they were still holding when the car went to the scrap yard.

This repair was done out of desperation of 16 YO kids that didn't know if it would work or not, but we damn sure didn't have enough money to have the tank fixed correctly in a radiator shop, and we didn't want all our cruisin gas to run out on the ground, and we were in a hurry too.......................LOL

That was in a 62 Belair bubble top and my buddy drove the car for probably 3 more years and it was holding when it went to the boneyard.

I used the POR tank repair stuff with disastrous results. The stuff peeled away in sheets.
I ended up buying a new tank for the goat. I've used POR stuff elsewhere with satisfactory results though.

I used this stuff as an emergency repair on my Lemans tank several years ago. Had about a 1/4" puncture from an improperly placed tow strap. Got to the track 20 minutes later and refilled the tank. Raced all day with no leaks. Been there 7 years now with no issues so I've left it.

I was just about to suggest this product. Worked like a charm for me, lasted 3-4 years and was in place when I sold the car.

Whatever you end up using #1 rule is clean and dry for the repair.

Is that the stuff that reacts with the gas? All you have to do is push it in to the hole(s)?

JB Weld is the best bet. Forget the rest. Call their 800 number if you want confirmation of whether it's fuel proof.

This stuff works. I've used it on plow trucks with good results.

Thanks for all the replies

I found this at some small hick store near the cabin and it worked like a charm.

This weekend I beat the the Dakota mercilessly in the woods, no leaks.

Glad you got it fixed.
Just for future reference- JB-Weld (and probably other 2-part epoxies) are gasoline-proof and work well if that area of the tank can be kept dry while it cures. The last time I had a small puncture in the bottom of a tank, I used a sheet metal screw and rubber washer to temporarily close the hole, then patched over screw-and-all with JB-Weld. It still looks great about four years later.

I had used this permatex stuff about 20 years ago, I bought my Bird in 1993, fixed a leak with it and prepped it as well as a 17 year old follows directions, never had an issue with it the repair, I drove the heck out of that car for about 10 years in Eastern PA winter salt and all.

Best stuff on the planet! beats WD-40 and Duct tape on the all time cheap fix list.
JB weld got nothin on this stuff.
