I did a little homework and found that there's a GM kit that includes the double lipped seal, so I picked one up off eBay for a few bucks. Once I took the clutch off, the leakage was obvious. There was also no felt to catch any oil which likely made the flinging worse. I got this compressor about 20 years ago from a parts store, it's probably a Four Seasons rebuild. The whole ceramic seal setup is so strange and convoluted, I'm not sure why anyone thought it was the best idea.
This thread on the Corvette Forum was super useful: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...placement.html The Mastercool tool kit the author of that thread mentions is pretty expensive and hard to find. I headed back to eBay to pick up an old school A/C service kit for $20 that had everything I needed. Now on the reassembly and hoping it seals. When I get everything back together, I'll install the shield just to be safe.

While it's apart, check the shaft for radial play. If the front bushing/bearing or shaft is worn, no seal will prevent leaks. The movement will just be too much for the seal to manage

Happy to send those A/C tools your way when you're ready. This is one job where you really need them!
I went to install the new seal with the installer tool, but the seal wasn't supple like I expected. I ended up getting slid onto the tool after some persuasion and with the help of some refrigerant oil, but I was worried that I damaged it. I ordered another seal to compare. Thinking maybe the seal I got had been on the shelf a while. There doesn't seem to be any play in the front shaft, but I'll give it a closer look. Also, I ended up pulling the whole clutch assembly off the front of the compressor. I really didn't need to do that and just created more work for myself since I'll have to press it back on.

Don't think anyone has mentioned that the new double lip seal is Teflon. I purchased a new A6 compressor and it came with the old style carbon seal that lasted about two years. I installed the new Teflon seal myself and it is still leak free after many years.
My added shield came off a '74 Buick Electra in a Pick-A-Part, and it definitely saved a lot of cleaning. I left it in place after installing the new seal but it really wasn't needed.

I got the seal installed tonight. One trick that's important to fit the seal is to gently push it over the round end of the installation tool to size it to the compressor shaft. Out of the bag the ID is quite a bit smaller and it's impossible to install it without damaging. I learned this the hard way because like an idiot, I worked the first seal I got through the blunt end of the seal install tool which has a sharp-ish edge and messes up the seal. Fortunately these seals are cheap and the second one went on with no issue.
The kit contained a tool to drive in the seal which didn't take much effort at all. Afterwards, I got hasty and went to reinstall the clutch without the proper tool and ruined the bearing. So now I have to pull it back off and replace the bearing or get a new clutch. D'oh.

Verdoro ... how did this turn out? Did you get the clutch pulley tool? Is everything back together?
