Cool car, sold new at Ted Stevens Pontiac in Los Gatos. I used to work at his Honda dealership right around the corner, and I've already got the plate frame hanging in the garage...

I got a chuckle out of seeing the Accel Supercoil bolted to the firewall on a car with a unitized ignition. The guy probably bought that coil, bolted it up, and then went to hook up the main coil wire to the dist cap and discovered there was no place on the top of the distributor to plug it into!

Should only take around 100 grand to get it to perfect shape. ;-)

My original formula 455 had initized ign, I drove that car over 50k miles before the pick up went bad. Replaced it and it started right up. The only bad thing about them was if you had a problem, parts were harder to get. The were actually very reliable, they just had the stigma about them because nobody knew what to do if something failed, so they called them troublesome.

I agree. Because the parts are just about nonexistent and very expensive when you can find them, they are very troublesome indeed.

Nope, I wasn't going past 20K, that was my bid. If it were lucy blue I would have gone much higher though.

Actually, it looks like a body that was pulled off the line then placed back in a few days later. Referencing the IDENT 180381 from build sheet. New body number is too big (7 digits, not 6).

Guess not that unusual.

I found at least 3 other 72 Bird build sheets with a body number marked out and another one put in.

But they were all on the same 'day'?

Box 10 had - 21 01-09

Possibly the person inputting the data was a little off that day?

They had different IDENT numbers, so it may be a 'work ticket' type thing?

(at my old work we called them A.I.T.'s for Additional Instructions To)

We know that there were a few notable changes to the '72 model year Firebirds that were to take place on and after January 1st. Most if not all were federally mandated safety improvements. It appears Pontiac wanted to (or needed to) come up with a way to identify the previous standards body shells from the bodys which incorporated the updated features. The way this was done was by switching from the old 6 digit Body Number (which was up to at least 177xxx by the end of Dec. '71) to a new 7 digit series which began with '21'.

I have found no 21xxxxx Body Numbers dated before 01A and only a handful of 01A bodys which did carry over the old 17xxxx numbers. Our example here appears to be a body that had been scheduled to be built the last week of December but for whatever reason, was held over in to January.

It'd be interesting to know some of the details on this TA to see whether it was assembled with all later changed parts or a mix of early and late. The seat belts/shoulder harnesses are one quick way to ID late from early.

Have we ever composed a list if all the changes which were scheduled to take place on or after January 1st?
