Before you guys get too excited about the EGR valve on ebay, you should know it is only truly correct for a 74 SD-455 manual trans car.

It is listed in the 1983 GM parts book for 73 SD-455, but this is a superceded part number. The original and correct EGR valve for 73 SD was a different number, I don't have it in front of me, but Brewster could look on any of his 73 SD cars for the correct 73 number.

So if anyone with a 74 SD-455 manual trans car is looking for a NOS EGR valve, this is the one. But again, it is not correct for a 73 SD.

It would not even look correct as the vacuum hose fitting points forward on the 74, but it points up and backward on the 73.

FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO. 23 YEARS IN THE WAITING.
After the routine checking, priming, setting, and rechecks prior to starting an engine, combustion of air and fuel occurred. I do not have the new exhaust installed yet, so this was straight headers. Man what an awesome sound. I didn’t run the engine too long as I don’t have the radiator installed. When I installed a new engine, I always run it for a little without the cooling system installed incase the engine needs to be removed. Just enough to get a little heat built up and to check to see that everything appears to be working correctly or at least not to cause a concern. I must say that this HC-03 cam sounds nasty. I attempted to adjust the timing to at least hold an idle while keeping the revs up to prevent can failure, and this thing does not care for low rpms. I have the timing ball parked right now. I’ll play with it more once the cooling system is installed so I can bring the engine up to full temp. Initial oil pressure registered just above 80 psi on the stock gauge. I guess the SD pump does pump at a higher pressure. Then again my 400 w/ a melling DS45 pump does 60 psi on initial start then drops to 40 when hot. I have to tidy some things up, but for the most part, the engine is pretty much done. Over time, I’ll gather the ‘correct’ parts to replace the old looking (egr, zinc plated switches, rear carb vacuum tee, ect) and ‘incorrect’ appearing parts (plug wires, vacuum hoses, stickers, ect). I had a question where some of the wires went, but figured that out. The one connecter with a black and a tan wire goes to the A/C system which did not come on this car. I guess they used the same harness. I ran though the gears to see if the rest of the driveline had any issues. None so far. So, I will say another SD is up and running and soon to be terrorizing the streets and giving me thrills.

I would like to see if anybody has any pictures of 74 SD cars’ engine bays w/ the air cleaner removed so I can get so good views of the wiring, vacuum and clip layouts.

Engine looks pretty good!

Vacuum hoses should be color coded
Fuel line should have insulation on it.

See pictures I posted for you in your other topic.

Default SD Starter and carb dates

I was wondering, I just bought some SD parts one of which I was told is a SD starter, (see pic)is the SD starter different (part number) or is it just the fact it has the heat sheild? how do you tell the date? Also what is the earliest approx build date for the 73 SD carbs, mid NOV end of Dec. etc etc. Thanks

OE '73 SD starter would be an 1108495. OE '74 SD starter would be an 1108500.

I've forgotten the date code sequence though.

those are aftermarket pistons along with the glyptol coating (red). stock pistons are radiused on the top edge. you have the correct 2 valve relief pistons though.

Default Cleaning SD carb

This carb is one of the parts I recently picked up. According to the original purchaser(1975) he said it has 8-10K miles on it. What is the best way to clean this without removing the original finish? Is the pump arm supposed to be green? does that get washed off if I use regular carb cleaner Thanks

Green is correct for it and the choke pull off arm. Aftermarket and/or replacements for the pull off are silver. Carb cleaner should not change anything since they are powder coated and not painted.

Default Original SD carb factory markings?

I was just about to clean up this newly aquired 7043273 carb and I noticed some markings on the carb. Some look like they were done with a black sharpy and some with a paint stick. Here are some pics I thought you SD guys might want to see these just incase they come off. I am probably going to sell this carb at some point down the road do you think its more valuable with its original patina or cleaned up and rebuilt. Also is the power brake booster fitting at the back of the carb a SD specific part number? Thanks

keep the fitting with the carb, as they're kind of hard to bcome by and the potential buyer would likely want it. the markings i don't think are from the factory, but strangely enough, the butterflies on mine are numbered the same way.
