I remember a old thread on the inserts of the valence on 71s.

Are they silver or body color?

Was it a date sensitive thing?

Or am I wrong because I can't find thread?

Anyone have thoughts on silver vs body color?

I have a note here that for 1971 the Van Nuys cars had body color painted inserts and Norwood cars were left unpainted. This is assuming the metal valance, of course.

Interesting...

I have a set painted white, and the unpainted ones seem to be green. Thought they could be silver?

Well, when I'm going for the 1000 points I'll insert the silver ones. Haha

All of the NOS fillers that I've had over time were molded in the silver color like these.

Another interesting tidbit. If I look up the fillers in the 1970 Assembly Manual that were used with the steel valance panel they are a different part number than for 1971.

In the MPC they list the 1970 only as "paint to match".

480705 2.587 All F .................... FILLER, lamp (paint to match) RH 1970 1970 2-47
480706 2.587 All F .................... FILLER, lamp (paint to match) LH 1970 1970 2-47

483960 2.587 All F FILLER, lamp (w/steel val. panel) RH 1970 1974 2-58
483961 2.587 All F FILLER, lamp (w/steel val. panel) LH 1970 1974 2-58

The newer part number they dropped the "paint to match" from the description.

Ok, both pairs have part numbers molded in same spot? 483961 LH and 483960 RH and one is unpainted molded green in color? Confused now...

I bet if you were to sand the green down a ways you would get to a silver core.

I went and dug out the Gold 1970 only pair and a later Gold pair

Both appear to be molded in Gold. But, if I sand on them both

480705 and 480706 in the first shot, the 480706 in the second shot and 483960 in the third. All of these you would have sworn were molded in Gold.

They aren't.

You can see they have silver/gray underneath

Personally, I wonder if this is all F body thing in 70-71? Can't wait to see that 70 Black Formula in the museum.

Mike:
Just found your thread - wow! Didn't know you had it in you. Got a question on how to take the dash (woodgrain piece on my Formula) out to access the gauge cluster. Since you've had yours apart, is it pretty easy to take that part out to get to the cluster? I plan to replace my clock with a tach. I posted another thread on it but any tips would be appreciated.

Can't wait to see this on finished!
