Default cool old school find

Picked up a car this week with a ton of parts, and found this, I've only seen this on one other car. Not sure how well they worked or if they still make them.

I've got some in a coffee can full of bolts around here somewhere. In the '70s a friend used to call them "one bump & they fall out" spacers.

I have used them to adjust the ride height of a car. Until I could get the correct springs in. You must put them in the ends of the spring where the coils are tight and the weight of the car rarely unloads that far. If you put them in where the springs are open, they will fall out on the first bump.

Ya, I have never used them, but have seen them stuck on a 73 firebird once. They didn't look like they were coming out of that spring either, properly were there forever and holding the car together.lol

They are still produced and sold at most auto parts stores. I bought a 67 El Camino about a month ago and it had them in all four springs!

Not the worst scenario of corn cob engineering one can perform on a car.
You have to get them between two coils that are close together to hold them tight.

My 66 had them on the front when I bought my car. They did actually work.

A friend of mine with a '66 GTO asked me to put them in his front springs. Early 1973 I think.

We used Permatex, or similar, to hold them in place.

In high school I used scraps of 2x4s to jack up the rear end of my parent's 4 dr 68 Catalina and my buddies parent's 2dr 68 Catalina. They worked until you crossed some railroad tracks or hit a bumpy road.

My uncle had a new 71 454 Chevelle and totaled it because his 2x4 fell out. He went down over a bank and took out some huge trees. He was also drunk at the time.

Those are twist-in coil spring boosters, and yes, they still make them. Available at virtually all Auto Zone, Pep Boys, O' Reillys, or Advance Auto stores, they're right on the shelf, not special order or anything.

I've used them myself because when I change wheels on occasion, the ride height in front gets too low, so I simply stick in the twist-in boosters using a 1/2" drive ratchet, and the ride height comes up 1". I've never had one fall out or even shift around on the spring. But front coil springs are pretty tight, not sure how well they would do on rear coil springs.

Cheap, easy way to raise ride height. Of course, best thing to do is get the proper springs, but in some cases, these are convenient in that they can be installed or uninstalled in a few minutes.

You guys are sweet, I guess we all have problems and get crabby at time. Still not right, but I'm sure we are all guilty of it. Its cool. And I learned to not put a 2x4 in my back end. Lol, you might have to swallow this time marxjunk.

On my '65 I have 1 on the pass. side and 2 on the drivers side. I guess the weight of the battery needs an xtra one ?
