Default 1971 Formula 455 Space Saver Spare

I recently purchased a 1971 Formula 455 HO with M22 Transmission. The build sheet indicates N98 rally II wheels with PM7 F60-15-B Tires. My question if the car came from the factory with 15" wheels what size was the factory N65 Space Saver spare? Was the space saver spare 14" or 15"?

IIRC the Bird and camaros space savers were 14" , the 15 ones had a bigger bolt pattern. ( from memory)
Should be an F( 78 series) size tire and should be 26 " tall when inflated, roughly same height as the 60's on the car. The "gas can" is specific for 14 or 15" tires.
Most of what I saw were UA code near valve stem, but GM was changing vendors on stuff like that .
We tossed a bunch at Pontiac dealerships.. Customers didnt trust the gas filler in cold temps , and they were right. many were duds when new.

The question may be moot: Was your car ordered with a space saver spare? Post a photo of the jack mounting locations that are welded to the trunk floor and we can tell you if it was.

Welcome, Elkykid!

Great you have documented 71 Ho M-22 Formula! Even better you have build sheet too! Not many ever find these sheets in our cars.

Since, we have very little details of the car. You do know a build sheet is a found item stuffed in car by factory. PHS is what we order based on vin, and is the invoice that was created by Pontiac.

With that how about more details of the car and condition?

Elkykid, Sounds like a great car you have there! Could you post a picture of the build sheet? You can block off the vin number if you don't want it shown.

Cool car! Looks like you have a bit of a project ahead of you as someone added T-tops and molded rear wheel flares. Very 1970's!

Yes Indeed very 70's it also had hooker side pipes. Hurst T-Tops were added as well. I have a donor roof and quarter panels. Odd to have to replace panels on a non rusty car. On the positive side the engine & trans are original to car and all of the engine components were all there except the ignition which i found a donor in Norway.

Congrats on picking this one up! Very nicely optioned car, and a color combo that will look sharp when restored. Sounds like it got the complete list of top '70s mods for these cars!

Thanks also for posting the GM Canada docs, as they often shed light on things that aren't covered on a PHS invoice. For example, yours verify that a Formula ordered with the 15" Rally II wheels would have had trim rings on them, since there was no way to order the trim rings separately on a Formula, yet they're on your spec list.

Still learning these things....

Sport mirrors were standard on Formula?

Thought 15 inch wheels required handling package?

Prior owner added trunk lid spoiler

It does have sway bars was that standard?

Build sheet does not mention G80 limited slip differential odd with this power train combination.

Still guessing the space saver was 14"?

Anti sway bars were std.
Anti Sway Bars Rear
"Some" 1970 TA and Formula had smaller rear bars like 1/2 or so.
1970-72 T/A & Y96/Y99 Birds = 7/8" (.875)
1973-77 T/A & Y96/Y99 Birds = 13/16" (.813)
1978-81 T/A & Y96/Y99 Birds = 5/8" (.625)
1978-81 WS6/WS7 equipped = 3/4" (.750)

1975-81 Base & Esprit Bird = 9/16" (.562)
1970-74 Formula = 5/8" (.625)
1975-77 Formula = 9/16" (.562)
1978-81 Formula = 5/8" (.625)

Front Bars:
ALL '70-'81 T/As & Y96/Y99 equipped Formulas came with 1-1/4" (1.25) front sway bars.
Std. Formulas had 1-1/8" (1.125) bars till 1978, then it was 1-1/4".
Std. Birds had 15/16" (.938) till 1975, then it increased to 1"
>>>> G80 was not dependent on the powertrain like the gear ratio options were. You could order G80 on just about anything, BUT all Trans Ams up to at least '77 I think Had a G80 as std.
>> Spares.. due to the bolt pattern, the spares I have seen are 14" with correct tire height. There is one on Ebay now ( not mine) for $199 or B/.O

Thank you for all of the information very helpful. I purchased a new 15" Goodyear space saver tire without the rim which will now be for sale and I will persue a 14" set up to restore the firebird correctly.
