Default NOS "Hairy Hose" Value (Super Duty)

Looking for some opinions on the value of an NOS "hairy" air inlet hose. This is the 4" round, corrugated, flexible hose that connects to the air cleaner on a '73 & later Firebird/Trans Am.

I know that nice used ones are hard to find, let alone NOS, so what say you?

Put it on Ebay and you'll find out what it's worth. With NIB wagner brake hardware kits selling for $165 ($8 at any NAPA store) and Judge Quadrajet cores selling for $5500, it's anybody's guess. I would speculate that your $6 hose may bring $300-$500....possibly more.

What number? '08 (shorter hose) will sell for more than the '09 (longer hose). Your price on eBay looks good and am surprised no one has entered a bid, but you don't show a length with the tape. Box number is smudged and could be an 8 or a 9 at the end. The "NOS" ones being marketed on eBay now is holding down prices for the less knowledgeable.

This is one of the longer units and not correct for a F-body car. Still rare and collectible just not sure what is the correct application?

Mike,

I don't have mine listed on eBay. Someone inquired about it and I don't know that I want to sell it. Just trying to get some opinions at this point (and no, I'm not fishing for a sale).

geeteeohguy:

Don't know where they are available for 6 bucks each in this style, but if they are, I'll buy every one I can find at that price This is not the Service Replacement "rubber" material, but the correct, early, fibrous style...

I was referring to the original cost/price 40 years ago, blue71! No bearing on prices today, at all.

The correct hairy ones are like finding hen's teeth. Not everyone even knows they exist. If nos non hairy replacements sell for $700 on e bay, then original hairy ones should sell for more. I always thought they're worth between $400-$800. I have one but would not even consider selling it.

How do you even run one after paying that kind of price? I understand show cars and No 1 cars wanting these, but this is whacky nuts and just adds to the never drive them thing.

I agree, only for show cars.

Ok, so I think maybe the air cleaner intake hose went through three variations - hairy hose with plastic liner inside, hairy hose with no liner but an outside coating that made it air tight and less hairy, and then the vinyl hose. I have a an original hairy hose and an NOS hairy hose and they are identical, I also recently acquired a later model hose that is GM NOS but too long and only sort of hairy, and then of course we are all familiar with the more recent NOS vinyl hoses. I recently bought a Sort of Hairy hose that was longer than the '73 - '74 models, but which I think is the correct material for a later application other than the length. MPD and I were able to shorten it today for a TA application and am pretty jacked up at how it came out and looks.

Below are a few pictures that show a NOS early short hairy hose, a used early short hairy hose, a later model sort of hairy hose that is too long, and a later model sort of hairy hose that used to be too long but isn't any more.

The shorter one is correct for the '73-'75 models, the longer one is for the '76-'79 models. All of the vinyl Service Replacements I have seen are the longer variety.

I only know enough to be dangerous, but this original 76 mile car doesn't appear to have a 16 segment hose. I can only count 13. I agree there was a change at some point in the material between the original hairy hose and the final version that was vinyl, but I am not sure that the later model second gen TA's got a long second gen hairy hose based on this picture.

Nice work on that hairy hose, Bob!

BTW, tell MPD that he could make a whole lot more money helping guys lengthen their hairy hose... not shorten them!

Here is a tip for those looking for this hose.

Waters Corporation (analytical instrument company) used to sell a unit (GPC-150) that used the exact hose for it's exhaust. High temp as well.

I could find out where it is sourced.
