Trunk Torsion Rod Solution
So after many failed attempts at trying getting the correct torsion rods for my '71 Firebird I determined that there are no good torsion rods available in the aftermarket. The OER replacements are junk - even when you have the correct rod in the correct direction on the correct side of the trunk.
So in the search for a decent solution I came across this gas strut kit for 2nd gen Firebirds and Camaros from Eddies Motorsports out in California. This is not on their website but I have included pics that they provided me below. Basically it is a gas strut kit with billet brackets for the mounting points. Cost is $85 plus shipping, a fair deal in my opinion because it solves the problem. Thought I would share in case you guys want to solve your limp lid issue once and for all on your Firebirds.

I like it. Will it support a decklid with an added spoiler?

Yes, specify that when ordering. They have versions for with/without spoiler on metal trunk lid and a version for light weight fiberglass. The variable is the sizing of the gas strut for a specific weight to lift/hold.
Also, it you look at the pictures, that lid has the spoiler.

Looks like a nice piece. Question, can the deck lid be lowered down, closed but not latched and it stay there? Or will that strut react the same as the factory tension rod and keep the deck lid open if its not latched shut?

Kit is on its way..I'll report after I install what the behavior is.
Also, I am leaving the two lighter tension rods in place to take up any slack in the factory hinges. Right now the trunk stays half way up when open.

did not see any on ebay, I emailed ames, but I rang a spring manufacturer here and he has no problem making some in 8mm same as the factory size, $100 for 1 or $160 for 2 that ozzy dollars, so I will probably go with that, but open to suggestions ......

As a follow up, this solution worked great. I don't have pics of the installation on my car since it is back apart for paint but exactly as seen in the pics earlier in the thread.
