Latest progress...Dan & I removed the hood and I scrubbed the grease and grime from 45 years off of the underside and then, in a moment of weakness, decided to "RAM AIR" it. The hood alraedy had the RA screens installed in the scoops, and Mike (Judge273) sold me an original '71 RA air cleaner, and I had NOS black '71 'Ram Air' hood decals....so, pulled the trigger. While I did that, Dan swapped in an original '71 Delco distibutor and repop spark plug wires for the MSD billet distributor unit that the car came with. We set it up with stock points and is set at 12* initial with a full advance at 41* @ 2500 rpm, and 50* with vacuum advance. Should work well with the 8.2 compression and the Summit 2801 cam (214*/224*/112*@.444"/.466").
Found the AO Smith embossing and the original factory crayon date on the front hood bulkhead (2-12-71). There are alot of black paint runs along the back edge of the hood near the vents which may be factory??? I'm not sure, but it is satin black and has canyon copper overspray. |

Car looks great Dennis and the paint has great depth. Pulls you right in! glad to see you got some plates on it to finally take that thing for a test run. Please let us know how it is??
Love Dan's GT37 in the neighboring stall. Killer car and would love to see him pull a few runs someday. Cheers and look forward to a road trip soon. Cheers, Brew |

Dennis - Car looks great and you keep making fantastic decisions. Did you and Dan have a chance to take it around the block after you got finished?
Can't wait to see it in Dayton. Thanks for sharing. BTW - be sure to keep the hood unlatched when garaged. |

Very nice detailing on that hood. Matches everything I've seen in them over the years.

Thanks for the compliments Doug, Karl, Brian, Bob, Chris, & Mike!
Brian & Bob, I am still waiting for the registration for my plates to come back, so I've only driven it 100' total so far (lol). Still owe everyone a burnout video! Bob, Yep, the hood always stays unlatched while garaged. I don't want the dreaded bulge! Mike, Thanks for selling the RA unit to me, now I have to find the correct breather tube, upper dip-stick tube (HO specific), snorkle braces, and heat riser elbows. Dennis |

Steelies & Dog Dishes
Here is the alternate wheel/tire selection...15x7 steel wheels (from Dan's T-37 when he once raced it with G60x15's) and BFG 255R60/15's curtousy of Bentwheel Bob. The wheels are painted Castillion Bronze, like the original 14x6 steel wheels that came from the factory on the T-37. A-bodies only had 5 wheel color paint choices available (black, castillion broonze, laurention green, baja gold, and lucy blue(?)), so this technically isn't factory correct as Firebirds could get all availble colors for steel wheels when no trim ring or wheel cover was ordered, but same as the body color. I do like the contrast and it is staying that way.
BTW, I reused the original SS capped lug nuts on the steel wheels. I hadn't yet read the thread about what lugnuts were original with 14" & 15" Rally II's or HC's. My Formula's build date on the body tag is 05B, so no controversy with what nuts it came with. Let me know what you think vs. the HC's....Dennis |
