Lloyd, Thanks and yes I noticed a big difference in the weight of each wheel when swapping them. Love your old '72 SD (SunDance) car!

Doug, I appreciate the preference of the HC's...it's a tough choice cause I like them all. I want to find a set of JW/KR's for it as well, kinda like a women with shoes, haha, can't have too many. The HC's have 12 year old BFG's on them, so I want to get new(er) R245/60x15's for them soon. Even though they look really good, I don't want to push my luck since I want to drive this Bird.

SDBob, Thanks and the other wheels have a better stamp of the '0' for the year.

I like the honeys but needs trim rings to set it off.

Mike, Darn Right!

Darrell, You mean trim rings for the Honey's? Yes, they do need them, but weren't available for '71, but I'm not following the rules exclusively anyway. If I have some extra's, I'll put them on the HC's once I get the new tires mounted.

Never been a fan of hubcaps myself. The plain, chromed center cap and no trim ring on the Honeys doesn't really do it for me either. Those years with the Rally II's and red center caps were the ticket. But, what do I know, I'm running these now on one of the Formulas.

HFR, Wow, that's bling! No problem about the wheels, to each there own. I used to hate the dog dish look back in the 80's when the restoration craze was taking off, but softened to them over time, especially when my brother Dan got the T-37 sleeper with the dogs and G78x14 blackwalls.

Default Black Stripes

I don't have any burn-out videos yet, but this was the Saf-T-Track test for the Formula last Friday when it was still decent weather. This was its maiden voyage of about 3 miles total. No problems...brakes good, clutch good, steering good, tracking good, posi good. It has the first generation Pypes crossflow muffler, so, as Dan and I think, sounds a bit raspy. I think I'm going to order a new crossflow so I don't sound like a pick-up truck with cherry bombs and mudders. Also had some time to install repro rear sway bary bushing brackets to replace the aftermarket gold junk.

Gardner has an exact system but I'm sure you're aware of that. I love mine

Doug, It has the complete Pypes 2-1/2" mandrel bent X-pipe system, circa 2000-ish, that is in really nice shape still, so I belive that the only muffler that will work/fit is the Pypes crossflow. The newest ones are a little quieter, has better tone, and flow a smidge better. If the car was being restored, I'd go the Gardner or Waldren route.

I forgot to mention that the carb is way too rich and is coming off for a rebuild and rejetting this Friday. It left more black smoke from the tailpipes than was left of the road from the

Looks like some wheel hop there Dennis...or flat spotted tires?

Chris, I didn't feel any in the butt-o-meter, but it must have had a little. I see that I did spin them over the tar-patch and I wonder if I pulled some up and left a little mark with every tire rotation. I can see that the tires didn't leave hardly any rubber (black plastic) on the road before the patch...hmmm. I'll be 'testing' again this Friday, so I'll pick a better section of road.

I think you're right about the picking up the tar part. The pattern matches the line you went over. Solid on the left, split on the right.

it's like CSI-Blacktop on here.....excellent forensic work! If only there was a demand for keenly honed and advanced skills of blacktopography...

Boss, If it wasn't for the tar, you would hardly know that I did anything...good eyes with the tar forensics like RicksGTO so aptly put.

Default Update & Setback

Tore the carb apart (original 7041267) and rejetted (leaned it out slightly) and reinstalled and couldn't get the front inlet (big one) to stop leaking. We discovered it was heli-coiled, gasket seat was gouged up, and also found 3 stripped air horn to main body holes. It was sucking air in from everywhere and was its own major vacuum leak...disappointing. So 3 carbs later we finally got another 7041267 carb on the motor that ran really well. The original carb is going out to be repaired (hopefully) if it can be.

So no burn-out yet, but the quick run down the road and opening the secondaries in 2nd gear lit up the tires! Never had that happen before.

Default Maiden Voyage

Finally got the chance to drive the Firebird to its first official outing to the Eyes on Design show at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Mansion along Lake St. Claire east of Detroit proper. The headlight switch dimmer fried and made a stink (no fire thank goodness!!!) and wouldn't allow the courtesy lamps and dash lights to turn off, but removed the bulbs and the fuse to make sure it wouldn't try to burn up again. The bird ran great on such a hot day (95* on the way home). the temp gauge never got above the 180* area on the freeway at 65 mph and would drop at slower speeds (in the city), so I'm very happy with the cooling system. Fuel mileage was 14.5 (+) mpg, so not bad for a big pig. My SD455 TA got the same, so not surprised since they both have 3.42 gears.

So, I have to replace the headlight switch and get to working on repainting the honeycombs next, as well as a few other little things. It's so great to be driving the HO after the long journey since it came home that cold winter day!

by any chance, do you have links to larger versions of these (or other) photos?
