74-75 tailpipes?
what do you guys with performance motors do for tailpipes? the stock single tailpipe replacement is only 2 inches at the joint and 2 1/2 at the exit, but if your running 2 1/2 exhaust from the manifold back how would you join up to a stock looking tailpipe and have it flow right?

Ajax, it's so far back in the system and the volume/heat of the exhaust gas has been reduced do significantly by that point, that it's not seen as a restriction by the engine.
Keep in mind that '74 and '75 do not share tailpipe extensions. '74's are a longer version of the '71-73 style where as '75 is its own. While it looks similar, it's contoured differently and is welded to the pipe unlike '70-74, which are a slip-fit design retained with a clamp. |

Performance years sells a repro tailpipe 2 1/2 inch for 74's. That is what I used on my exhaust.

ajax, from certain angles the '74 and '75 (non-455 cars) tailpipe extensions look identical, but you can see in these photos by John Glasgo of an extremely low-mile '75 Trans Am he once owned, the pipes are shaped differently. They have a bit of a kink in them that allows them to follow the shape/contour of the quarter panel.
I know many places market the '74-75 tailpipe as the same, but the extensions are definitely unique to each year. As you noted, the 455 cars were equipped with splitters in '75. Hope that helps! |
