if a/c unit complete, simple recharge likely fix?
Hi, I have been shopping for a car (68-69 lemans/gto) for a several months now, and see a lot of cars with complete a/c system present, but not working. If the car has been sitting for years, is it likely that a simple recharge will get the a/c back up and running, or do parts commonly deteriorate or require replacing before will work properly? I have heard some suggest just best to replace with an aftermarket unit. but if it can save a couple thousand dollars to just do a recharge... (i'm in AZ so a/c is critical for me)

No, Replace the 40 plus year old hose and "O" ring seals, with R134 compatible.
the evaporator and condenser should be checked of leaks.

Definitely replace the receiver/drier also. If system has been down any length of time with a leak, the desiccant bag in there will have completely absorbed any moisture from the air and will no longer work in the system.
