Default Letting go, for now

Well, we got rid of the two performance vehicles in our family, both within the last two weeks. Mine was a 2012 911 Targa 4S that I've had since 2015. I just figured that it's going to be 10 years old soon and I still got a decent buck for it, so that was it. The other one was my wife's 2018 BMW X4 M40i. The lease was up on it and for the first time since 1996, there won't be a current generation Bimmer in our driveway. So now we're just a couple of pleebs. I'm driving my 2007 Tundra, and my wife is puttering around in our 2018 Subaru Imprezza. Kind of melancholy but also liberating as well. And of course I always have a hobby car. I'll just have to see if I get bit by the sports car bug again.

The Subaru is nice, and fun right?

I guess the Tundra is built for comfort?

Do whatever makes you happy.

I could afford to purchase a fleet of new cars in cash but drive a 22 year old Honda Accord, 26 year old Lincoln Towncar, and 36 year old Toyota pickup.

The richest guy I know (FILTHY rich) drives a stripped down 1989 Toyota pickup.

Same here, sold my 99 Vette and 02 Camaro LE because I didn’t use them much. Got my xt5 and Silverado 2500 plus my Firebird, Z28, and Nova SS. Want to make life simpler.

It's always nice to have a German car in the stable.

I'd really like a Techno Violet E36 M

Went down to North Carolina with my son (24) in January to pick up a super low mileage 2008 BMW M3 6 speed manual. Last generation of the S65 engine (normally aspirated V8) and has a redline of 8300 rpms. Car is 13 years old and still a marvel of engineering to me.
Guess I got him hooked on performance vehicles. Two years ago he built (by himself) a 573 hp (at the wheels) turbo powered E85 sippin’ Honda SI. He still has that (wants to keep his first car).
He’s already planning a procharger for the M3 as I guess 414hp isn’t enough lol

Got the bug (real bad) to get another 95/97 Towncar Executive, maybe Signature and put the spare PMD 455 +060 in it, bell adapt to the 4R70W. Dizzy and carb that can evolve to Coil plate and fuel inj. Located a same-color Towncar in town in better body paint condition than my nice 95. Maybe he will sell.

Aren't those Challengers still based on the (now ancient) Mercedes W210 chassis?

I'm in my 5th decade of driving/owning different cars. Just yesterday I bought my very first car that isn't a G.M., Ford or Studebaker. Yep, I've never owned a foreign car or a front wheel drive car. 4WD, yes.
It belonged to a 91 y.o. lady who hasn't driven it in a few years. It's complete, rust free, runs and drives, but was bought as a parts car for work. It's so nice I asked my wife if she wanted it, and she declined. "We have enough cars" she said.
Crazy woman, there is no such thing.

Cool Mercedes. I remember what those cars were the thing to have in the 80’s. That interior is in fantastic shape!

As for the OPs 911; I didn’t used to like them until I drove one. I think they make some with flat plane cranks, too. A few times I’ve heard something winding up and looked expecting to see something exotic like a brand ending in “I” or a MacLaren, but it’s “just” a 911.

The key for me is to make sure my daily driver is as practical *and* fun as possible. Since I haul three big dogs around and travel into/through the mountains at all times of year, an AWD wagon with decent power and a sporty suspension is the answer.

I found a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT wagon with a 5 speed. Only year they made them with the 5 speed and only 192 black ones with black Limited interior made. Threw some performance upgrades at it and now it makes around 330 horses and handles great. Very comfortable with all the luxury doo-dads I need - heated mirrors, windshield, and seats, all leather, dual zone climate control, navigation, nice stereo, etc.

It's not a Porsche or 'Vette, but it hauls dogs, people, material from the hardware store, gear for a weekend camping trip, etc, is really fun to drive, and goes anywhere in all seasons (put snow tires on in winter and it's fantastic on snowy roads.)

As much as I'd love a 911 or Z06, I'm at my limit of impractical cars with two firebirds and between me, my girlfriend, and her kids, we just don't have room for any more vehicles.

If we didn't have the Pontiacs, then I'd probably have another sports car. This wasn't a monetary decision at all. I think that the pandemic kind of changed my priorities and I've had quite a few cars come and go, so no big deal. I can always get another. I got the Porsche because it was an amazing deal. I bought it off of a Chinese guy who had to skidaddle back to China. I lowballed him and he took the deal. I never regretted buying it because although it was a sports car, it could be driven year round.
I'm not a huge fan of the Subaru. It's the first non-Toyota Japanese car that I've owned. It's OK, and certainly was inexpensive, but it just doesn't feel as solid as my Toyota's. My wife likes it, though.
The Tundra has been paid off for ten years now and it just continues to add value. Seriously, that truck owes me nothing.

I believe so. I've had a couple of E430 MBZ's and they were nice driving cars. Its a tried and true platform.

8-10 years ago I had a 2009 Challenger R/T. Added Eibach drop springs and struts. Staggered 20" wheels/tires. The car rode and handled great for a big heavy car.

I enjoyed driving the Challenger a lot more than the MBZ.

I have never driven or owned a foreign car. My brother in law always has a BMW or 2 of something or other. After the warranty is up they always seem to need lots of money in repairs. He always says how great they are and bashes any American car. The money he spends on those things, he could have bought something cool like a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger or Charger. They are always in the dealer. I am born and raised in the Detroit area and never really had any exposure to foreign cars. I have always loved and lusted for muscle cars. I am probably going to keep my 76 Firebird forever. The kids can fight over it when I am gone. I do have my eye out for a 1977 Monza Spyder, like I had in high school. I would do an LS and a six speed with that.

Cool. You probably did very well financially with the Targa 4S. 997s have been on the rise for the past few years, and a T4S is a pretty rare/special one.

I let my 997 go at the start of the pandemic, too. At some point I'll probably get another.
