Visiting Detroit
G'Day Guys,
So, I will be in Detroit for a week from Monday 6th June for work (Ford). I will have the following Friday, Saturday and half of Sunday free to do whatever. Any suggestions? Was thinking of driving (will have a rental) to Niagara Falls for the day. Is this doable? I can see its about 250 miles away. Thought about visiting the Ford Museum, is there a Pontiac Museum? Any drag racing on that weekend? Any suggestions would be welcomed. Tony. |

Go to The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village if you do nothing else. You need a whole day for those IMO.

I believe the Michigan Widetrackers Chapter of POCI has their car show on Saturday, June 11. Google it for directions.

Be careful. It's one of the most dangerous places in the US.
You can ask your coworkers in Detroit where you should NOT go and when as well.

Driving 4 1/2 hours each way is certainly doable but not, IMO, very fun. Niagara Falls is a great thing to see, but I wouldn't make that drive. I've heard great things about the Ford Museum.

x3 on Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, except it really takes about 2 days to do it justice.
No Pontiac museum - that ended up in Pontiac Illinois rather than Pontiac Michigan. K

I would love to but I have no control on the path. Going via Auckland (Air New Zealand). At least I get to go business class but it's a struggle when the Missus and I fly for our holidays in cattle class after doing business class.

Yep, all the lads here at work who have been have warned me about some of the areas.
Has the navigation systems in the rental cars have an "avoid rough areas" option. |

Might do the Griswold's thing, drive up 4 1/2 hours, get out and take a couple of photos then get straight back in the car and drive back the 4 1/2 hours.
Living Down Under we spend a lot of time driving to get to places as we are fairly spread out but yeah Niagara will be a stretch. |

Last summer we went to niagra falls (canada side), ended up staying in toronto. When we came home, we drove through canada to Detroit, was there for the Woodward Cruise, then drove back home, almost to cleveland in one day. It can be done. But to visit the falls or actually enjoy it, it will make for a long day.

Visit the Packard plant, then Greek town and be sure to stop at White Castle for a burger.

As mentioned - the Ford Museum is worth seeing. When I was there years ago some of the best car exhibits were the Pontiacs...
A shorter road trip, yet very unique, would be the Auburn, Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn, IN. It's in the original factory showroom (art deco building) and they have several exquisite cars there. It's about 150 miles away - depending on where you actually are staying in Detroit. |
