Default Advice

I just got an email from someone I don't know telling me there is a guy on Facebook who has a 72 455HO block and if I send him my vin or the last 6, he will check to see if it is mine. I replied asking him if he could send me the gentleman's phone number and or the vin on the block. It seems I had discussed the original engine with this gentleman as the email I received was titled re-formula and did have my signature block in the email, but the body of the text was removed. My original email to him was dated 9 years ago and I don't remember ever being in contact with him. It could very well be legit, but I'm just a little suspicious. Will wait and see how he replies to my response. Any advice on how to handle this? Am I being to over cautious?
Thanks.

I don't know what the concern is that some people have of not showing the whole vin, but I am sure there are good reasons. I don't want to offend anyone with that statement but would like to be enlightened so if there is a good reason I don't make the mistake of doing it.

With that being said, I don't know why the guy couldn't send you the other guy's contact information or vin that is stamped on the block like you asked. Otherwise you could tell him you can send him the last 6 numbers in numerical order and not necessarily in the correct order and he can see if those numbers are what is on the block.

There are people that re stamp blocks out there. Do not give him any info make him give you the info. It's not hard to fake an HO block,4 Bolt mains and a restamp or SR block. JMO

I understand and agree on blocks getting re-stamped also. Just didn't know if there are any ther reasons people don't like showing complete vins.

The factory didn't always do such a good job stamping VIN numbers into blocks. The photo below is of the VIN stamp on a 1971 YE 455HO block that I've had for a number of years. I recently decided to check the VIN number on the block to see if it might belong to a car that is still on the road. I picked this block up from a guy that worked in the service department of a Pontiac dealership. This block was replaced under warranty.
