Default silver or charcoal grey 70-73 pics

i may be getting my 72 firebird repainted very soon to complete the resoration & am considering what color to go with. this is not a #'s matching car & was a base model firebird with a 350 2 barrel & the engine was gone when i bought the car. i have done a complete rebuild including upgraded suspension, stroked 400/467 engine & new black interior. the engine block is also painted black with aluminum heads & other accents so im going with that custom resto-mod theme vs stock original.

i have been searching here & on the internet for pics of silver or charcoal 70-73 firebirds & there are not very many... does anyone own a silver or little darker in the medium grey metallic shades? im leaning toward that color since it looks great on many other cars, kind of the "eleanor" mustang color from the gone in 60 seconds movie. just trying to see that silver-grey color on a firebird if there are any out there.

72 Silver is "Revere". It is a darker than many silvers. It actually has some green in it when you look close. Mine is original and I believe has aged even garaged. I think it darkened a hair over new, but not sure.

You can just Google "silver Formula 400" and you will get a bunch of pictures of silver cars. Here is a picture of a 70 Formula 400 that used to belong to a friend of mine. I helped him sell it the guy who owned it when this picture was taken. It is paint code 14, Palladium Silver. These cars look damn good in silver.

I bet a nice charcoal would look sweet ina Formula. The modern ones have a nice metallic to them.

I've always been partial to metallic grey, looks great on the 70-73 body, especially with the blacked out trim and bumper:

If you like the grey but are looking for something a little lighter than the other pic this is my BMW in Space Grey. I think it shows off the body lines/curves very well yet has more presence than the silver colors. I'd still go with the blacked out trim although brushed stainless looks terrific along side the grey.

wow that palladium silver car looks great, love the rims too! i plan to get a nice 17 or 18" rim like that for the pro tour look but will also run no trim ring rally 2's & possibly honeys along with my weld draglites for drag strip use. this is a multi purpose/look car.

the charcoal one looks very nice too but might be a little dark for me. i like them with blacked out bumpers & trim but also like the chrome bumper & silver trim around the front & rear windows. i wont be using any drip rails or the trim on top the doors or rockers & wheel wells.

i have looked at that BMW space grey as well as quite a few other colors on modern cars. KIA has a nice darker silver like the BMW in that pic. & the cyber-grey on C-5 vettes is nice but a little too dark for my taste. just so many colors to pick from when you get away from a factory 70's pontiac colors....

i did do a google search for silver or grey firebird but dont get much variety, figured there were more cars on here that members own or have owned or seen compared to what google might grab in a general search. here is the eleanor grey or actually its called dupont pepper grey metallic that i really like, it is a deep silver in bright light or sun & can change to almost a charcoal in darker light. looks awsome on the gt500 mustang with the black stripes & lots of other cars use it like cobras but they usually do a contrasting stripe that i propably cant do on my firebird. no chevy style racing stripes!

i do have a formula hood so am limited to any custom stripes... but there is a member here that awhile back did a dark charcoal formula & added the 70-72 T/A stripe in a contrasting darker charcoal with the bird on the nose.... looked great but probably expensive to get a custom airbrushed thinner stripe to fit between the scoops. heres a pic of his car too. thanks for the replies, keep em coming if you have them.

I think a 70-73 would look great in the charcoalish silverish grayish you are seeking.

This one was at the car show in Fernandina Beach today, 67 Bird though.

Color looks a little off here, but in person was very nice.

maybe on other cars... not on firebirds. havent seen a single 2nd gen that color & especially not 70-73's. thats just the general color im leaning towards & wanted to see some other 70-73's in that shade of grey or other silvers.

but thanks for your input.

A variation perhaps, but seen plenty similar in the same colours, and while they look good, they do also all look the same and you know where it started.

care to share any of these "plenty" that youve seen??

ive been a member here & on other t/a related forums for a long time... cant seem to recall seeing a single 2nd gen that color. silver in general is not too common on 2nd gens. obviously im sure there are some out there, but i would call it relatively rare vs "done to death."

Not firebirds, other cars. I meant the 'Eleanor' look in general. But you could do it just different enough that it doesn't look like you really wanted a Mustang.

Here's one for instance, similar to what you had in mind? For what it's worth, I think it looks unfinished without the pinstriping or some form of border around the stripes.

thanks, thats definitely one i have never seen before. & the color is very close to what im considering. i think the color looks great but not a fan of the racing stripes or the wheel flares on a formula or the rear height or the black rear tail panel or the shaved side marker lights.... but other than that it looks good. although on this color i think some type of contrast helps break it up, just kind of hard to do on a formula without looking tacky.

That is a nice car but how about playing down the stripes a bit? Rather than go gloss black on the strips and rear panel use a dark charcoal instead. I agree that it would also look better with pinstriping around the stripes.

yes, the gunmetal spectrum is what im shooting for at this point. have considered the 2-tone around the cabin, my painter does lots of cars like that & they look good, just not sure if i want that for my car... the side stripe is an option too but that makes it look too much like a clone, which im not really going for, i just like the formula hoods. my hood is aftermarket by the way.
