Thanks Teri, I wasn't sure on the '80 but thought I'd start there.

Down, but not out....

Progress continues on the Black Car. We finally got the dash all cleaned up and several structural cracks fixed yesterday. This morning I sprayed it with a couple light coats of SEM Landau Black and it looks like new. We used K-Tool Q Bond to fix the cracks and that stuff was amazing. It's a 10 second super glue type product, but it also comes with a bottle of black powder for plastic and gray powder for metal. You can use the glue standalone, but the best results are to sprinkle the powder over the crack and then put a drop of glue on it. This causes the product to bridge the break and the strength is amazing. In addition to the dash cracks, I used it to fix the broken ears on the rear Defog switch and the door lock switch. These were in fairly tiny pieces which were back taped while the product was applied to the front. Here's a few pictures.

Nice work Bob. That SEM Landau Black is the best stuff ever! I use it on everything. Makes a great desert topping. too. ;-)

Bob, what process did you use to prep your dash for painting?

Thanks, Bub

Bob:
Glad to see you posting again and learning Tapatalk. I just fingered it out myself and may use it as my main method of posting going forward. Posting pics seems easy to me compared to the hassle of photobarf.

I probably went a little overboard, but I washed it thoroughly with Dawn, washed it again with SEM Soap, and cleaned a third time with SEM Vinyl Prep. After this I only handled it with latex gloves and let the dash dry 24 hours before spraying. I did not use an adhesion promoter, and sprayed two fairly light coats of Landau Black Color Coat with the edges and openings cut in first.

I did the steering wheel also, but it didn't do well. There is a lot of spider veining still visible after several coats, especially in the 9:00 to 3:00 position, so I have ordered some SEM flexible primer surfacer that I hope will fill those in and provide a wet sandable surface. They aren't really cracks, but they are telegraphing through the SEM Color Coat.

Thanks Bob for responding to my request. I'm getting ready to do my Dash and was wondering if you did a different process than you did on your console. Dash boards in good to excellent shape are hard to come by and especially if they are originals and I wanted to make sure what steps to follow. Thanks for getting back to me.

I did do the dash different than the console. When I originally did the console I didn't use an adhesion promoter and sprayed fairly light coats. When compared to my '73 survivor TA the console was way too flat. I cleaned it up, used adhesion promoter, and re-sprayed with 3 medium wet coats. It looked much better after that and matched the '73 very well. The dash finish is a good bit flatter, likely in part due to the added texture, but regardless I used two lighter coats to make sure. It too matches the '73 very well.

I appreciate your apprehension. I feel like I am a rattle can master, but due to the rarity and value of original dashes it made me very nervous as well. I made sure to spray it early in the day before the "bar" had opened.... Also, cutting in the openings and edges helped a lot so that I could then spray the majority with a very even end to end spray pattern. Feel free to text me if you want to talk. 304.859.7509.

Well, Darrell is really starting to make some progress with the bodywork on the Black Car. Here's a few pictures from the last couple days. Darrell has been great to work with, and I am really getting anxious to get this thing in paint and finished.
