OKAY!!!
Years ago I talked to a fellow from Indiana who was racing a red '74 SD455 T/A in the late '80's Musclecar Drags. The car had 4.11 gears and a 4 speed and had everything optimized for that particular series rules. From what I recall the car ran very low 13's in stock trim. Being the owner of a '73 SD and knowing what the SD is capable of in PURE STOCK form; Mr G, would you care to share the information on the engine and drive line?

J GLASGO,
Wow... that 73 looks nice! What color of blue is that? This question leads me to another... is there a site online that contains OEM color chips for 70 - 73 Firebirds? Even one that has a list of available colors would be a start. Thanks. |

Not really nothing special about the motor,.060 over,0 deck, heads are milled .040,ross pistons,2 valve reliefs(these are not nhra replacements, and will not pass certification at PSMCDR) Childs and Albert Z-gap rings, with a low tension oil ring, early style sd cam.Absolutely no port work,or bowl work. These sd heads make really good power! The color is Admirality Blue,i had a picture taken of the color under the trunk lid,and it crossed to 83 Rolls Royce color, since Dupont did not have the exact formula in chrome base for 73 .It is really close,i did not even paint the bottom of the trunklid.

110 MPH.....
John care to share any info on that camshaft, (specs, idle quality)? Years ago i built a complete SD motor with the stock SD issue components(8.4:1 c.r) exhaust manifolds and a Brad Urban optimized 750cfm Q-jet. The only part that wasn't stock, was an H-O racing SD cam (HC-63) which spec'd out at 242/250@.050; 113/119LSA and .501" lift w/1.5 rockers. It had a fairly choppy idle and pulled about 11" of vacuum. The engine was in a '73 t/a, which was a no option car, had a 4 speed and 3.90 gearset. Best 1/4 performance was high 12's @ 108 mph.

Larry, the cam is a RA 4,which they supposedly came with at the beginning,i think it is even listed in the 73 service manual.I know that some people disagree with this. The 2 biggest things that make these cars run so well is the 2.5 mandrel bend crossflow exhaust with x-pipe(from PYPES)and straight through muffler. Also these repo tires when you heat them up really hook.I think that cam you had was pretty aggressive for 8.4 and exhaust manifolds.Open headers may have been something else.

John, how did you get the cam? Is it a factory piece?
I also have the PYPES crossflow, how did you mount the muffler....flow across the raised baffles or in toward the baffles openings? Just noticed the slow 60' on the slip!....that car is making some killer power on the top-end!!! I want some tuning notes!!!

J GLASGO,
That car really looks great. I like the way the Rally Wheels, white lettered tires, and chrome decor package stand out against the Admiralty Blue body. It looks very classy. Add an SD455 motor and 12.60 1/4 mile times..... what more could you ask for? I'd sure like to see some more pictures of the car. Jim |

Larry ,the car still has the original block, which is obviously not sd,so i dont have to deal with the cam gear issue.Heres a couple more shots to bore you with. The one in etch primer was taken last January.

Just a quick Q for J GLASGO:
Did you swap the hood/shaker set up purely to make it look like an original SD Formula? - or was there another reason that made you change from the original hood? (just curious) That is one beautiful car! - it's currently my desktop picture at work!

J GLASGO,
That is an amazing looking car! I love the stance. Did you use stock replacement springs to get that stance? Mike |
