What's a decent price for a 78-up Pontiac engine shaker asembly?
Looking at a complete 78 and up shaker assembly for the Pontiac motor. Would need to be restored but is complete. It is the version with round snorkel end.
What is a fair price? I checked eBay for reference and was surprised how high the asking prices were. Thanks

The 78/79 air cleaner bases with the W72 snorkel or earlier 75/76 wide snorkels are worth more than the standard round ones, Ive sold a few of these recently for less than the ebay prices and even then they sold for $350+... on ebay or from the price gougers out there expect to pay $400-500+ for a nice one. The shakers are not as rare since they are the same for non W72 cars sell for about $200 or a little higher for a very nice one.

Thanks for the feedback.
I managed to pick this up tonight and made out better than I expected for $250 CAD (~$185 USD). Had been on Kijiji.ca near Montreal for a month and I happenned to be nearby for work so I made an offer and the seller accepted. Missing the air cleaner lid and a few minor cracks but just what I need for my drag car project. As I am new to F bodies, I have lots to learn . Is this the lower shaker or the later/taller one? Thanks

Yes, I am pretty sure its the early 77 shaker. Smaller opening and pronounced ridge along the centre. Same one I have on my car. If you are not using the 2 port vacuum switch keep a hold of it AND the clip. I recently was on a wild goose chase looking for those 2 parts, they are not easy to find.

That is definitely the shorter 77 only shaker, looks to be in good shape though. |

The round snorkel is a better way to go, you do t need the plastic oval to round adapter. And the clips yo hold on are another hard one to find.
Yes the clips are hard to find, usually the shakers are missing the hose nipple and the ring. Also the one and 2 port clips on the bottom are hard to find. The one on the side Can be improvised out of a brake clip. Now look for the 4” hose. lol

If you open the Shaker it does not matter if you use the larger W72 oval inlet. Shoot a picture of where the ring attaches the metal base of the scoop to the air cleaner base. Some of the 77 short scoops used a 1/4" p[plastic spacer, and removing it gives another 1/4" clearance for any carb spacer or taller intake.
You can use some aluminum lawn chair screws top and bottom to attach scoop to metal or for my '64 Impala they have bolts to attach headlight bezel clips to the grill that are on top similar in appearance to the factory rivets. P DUd used to make a taller scoop you copuld bolt to the metal base. I think someone else is making them too now.

The car I bought came with the 403 shaker and plate, but no air cleaner base, so now that I have the Pontiac air cleaner assy and shaker plate I will be able to use either this lower 77 shaker or the taller one. If there is performance to be gained by opening up the shaker, I will likely hack the taller/later one. Can you clarify "aluminum lawn chair screws"? Not sure what you mean. Regarding the shaker air cleaner lid, are the Olds and Pontiac domed lid the same? If there is a difference, how can I ID them? Thanks

Pretty sure the 403 olds shaker is located on it's plate different than the pontiac shaker/plate set up, so you cant use the taller olds shaker as is, but I have heard that it can be relocated by drilling out the rivets & install on the pontiac plate or on the same position. Maybe others can confirm the details on that.

At ACE in the bolt section there are those screws-Very flat head and bottom side is flat and threaded sleeve. Looks like a shorted metal base with no plastic spacer.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/3-16-in-...1696/310667173 I have an Old Shaker I picked up way taller and a different spot. Taller fiberglass scoophttps://www.pro-touringf-body.com/product-page/mega-scoop

I’d say $350 is about the price on a 400 shaker these days, usually missing the drain plug and the hose and the mount ring and the rubber to Aircleaner seal, 403 ones you can’t sell.
I did a nice one up a few years ago, there’s a guy on the forum here who re rivets them on the base with the correct rivets. Dont cobble it.
