Do I really need to sacrifice a $50+ MSD cap to phase a rotor ?
So I have a new MSD Pro Billet that will be mated up with my Fitech. In order to properly phase the rotor I have to drill a hole in a brand new cap. That sucks because now I need to buy yet another cap to replace my freshly drilled cap when that task is complete. Anybody have an old cap they want to part with or is there a cheap aftermarket cap made from ‘Chinesium’ that can be sacrificial and fits the MSD?

Any of the regular points style caps with the twist on doohickeys will fit the MSD billet distributors. You don't need the screw down caps that MSD comes with.
Look closely at the base of the billet housing and you'll see the provisions for the twisty hooks. So you can use any cheap points cap you can find. |

You don't need to drill a hole in the cap. Can it be helpful? Yes. However if you are using an adjustable cap and you have accurate markings on the distributor housing and on the cap, you can phase the rotor without destroying the cap.
That's the way I did it, because like you I wasn't going to sacrifice a cap.

JL…adjustable cap or do you mean adjustable rotor?
I came across this article from Fitech (starts on page 4) implying drilling a hole to observe the rotor position was not necessary. Thoughts? http://https://static.speedwaymotors.com/pdf/52136203_3.pdf

The HEI phase cap "tool" gets a hole in #6 for ease of phasing any HEI dizzy. Made 1 decades ago, and costs a coil.

FormulaJones. I agree those standard caps might work, but…I have HEI style plug wires so that style cap might be a no-go

That way I wasn't stuck running those $50 screw on caps with hei terminals that I can't seem to find locally. I only mentioned it if you needed a cheap cap to cut a big window in, not necessarily for running. Just another option. |

To do it blind with an adjustable rotor, you just have to use math and know where the rotor to cap relationship is, as well as the reluctor to rotor relationship. Here is a great article from Haltech on the subject. https://support.haltech.com/portal/e...-rotor-phasing Here's another great article on the process. https://www.streetmusclemag.com/tech...onfigurations/

...which is why that'll be the LAST MSD cap I buy. |

Those are interesting articles. Since I can ‘math’, I am going to give the method in the Street Muscle mag a go. Seems reasonable. Will report back on the results. If it works I owe JL a beer.

The old ClearSpark caps work great for looking at rotor phasing. Don't know if they are still being made- might need to shop epay.
